How Egypt Business Days Are Defined

In Egypt, working days are the days of the week outside the Friday and Saturday weekend (a Sunday-Thursday workweek), minus the public holidays listed below.

The Friday-Saturday weekend is the government's: Circular No. 1 of 2006 made Saturday an official holiday, alongside Friday, in every unit of the state administrative apparatus, so ministries and government offices work Sunday to Thursday. Private employers follow Labour Law No. 14 of 2025 instead. Its Article 120 requires weekly rest of at least 24 full hours after no more than six consecutive working days and names no day, so a private firm's weekend is the employer's choice. This calculator counts the government's Friday-Saturday weekend; confirm a private counterpart's working week before relying on the count.

What is the Egypt workweek?

Egypt's government works Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the weekly holiday. Private employers set their own weekly rest day under the Labour Law, which requires at least 24 hours of rest a week but names no day. The calculator excludes both government weekend days and the listed public holidays from the working-day count.

Why are there so many Egyptian national holidays?

The calendar this calculator uses for Egypt combines civil holidays (Police Day on January 25, Sinai Liberation Day, Labour Day, June 30 Revolution Day, the 1952 Revolution Day on July 23 and Armed Forces Day on October 6), Islamic holidays that follow the Hijri lunar calendar (Eid al-Fitr, Arafat Day, Eid al-Adha, the Islamic New Year and the Prophet's Birthday), Coptic Christmas on January 7 and Sham El Nessim, the Monday after Coptic Easter. Each Eid closes for several consecutive days, so the number of dates closed in a year is above the number of holidays. Each year's Egypt holiday page lists every date.

How are Islamic lunar holidays handled in the calculator?

Egyptian Islamic holidays (Eid al-Fitr, Arafat Day, Eid al-Adha, Islamic New Year, Mawlid al-Nabawi) follow the Hijri (Islamic) lunar calendar. For years the government has not yet set, this calculator converts them from the Umm al-Qura calendar and tags them '(approximate)'; the day actually taken off can differ from that date, by a day for the moon sighting and by more when it is moved to a Thursday. Egypt's civil holidays have fixed commemorative dates, but the day off can move too: the Presidency's 2026 list moves five holidays to a Thursday, three civil (Police Day from Sunday 25 January to 29 January, Labour Day from Friday 1 May to 7 May, June 30 Revolution Day to 2 July) and two Islamic (the Islamic New Year and the Prophet's Birthday, each two days after its Umm al-Qura date). A sixth followed after the list was published: Armed Forces Day was taken on Thursday 8 October in place of Tuesday 6 October, which the Ministry of Labour announced on 1 October 2026. The civil entries carry '(unconfirmed)' for 2027 to 2029, which says the commemorative date is certain and the day off is not yet set.
