India Business Day Calculator

This calculator excludes Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, and other widely observed holidays. Results account for Indian weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and national public holidays.

How Indian Business Days Are Defined

In India, business days are Monday through Friday, excluding national gazetted holidays. The calculator includes national gazetted holidays applicable across India. However, India also has a large number of restricted holidays and state-specific holidays; each state observes its own set, and some central government offices observe additional regional holidays. The Reserve Bank of India publishes its own holiday schedule which governs banking transactions and NEFT/RTGS availability.

Indian National Gazetted Holidays

National gazetted holidays in India include three fixed-date national holidays:

  • Republic Day (January 26)
  • Independence Day (August 15)
  • Gandhi Jayanti (October 2)

In addition, the holiday schedule includes a set of religious and cultural holidays whose dates shift with the lunar/Islamic calendar each year, including Holi, Eid ul-Fitr, Eid ul-Adha, Diwali, Dussehra, Christmas Day, and others. The exact dates are published annually by the Ministry of Personnel. This calculator uses the most recently published schedule. How we determine holidays →

Common Use Cases in India

The Negotiable Instruments Act and RBI payment system regulations define business days for cheque clearing, RTGS, and NEFT settlements. Indian courts follow the Limitation Act 1963 for deadline calculations, with court-specific vacation periods also affecting filing windows. Many technology outsourcing contracts specify IST business days, which must account for the Indian public holiday calendar when calculating SLA response windows.
