Calculate business days in New Zealand with all 12 public holidays under the Holidays Act 2003 pre-loaded, including Matariki (added in 2022) and Mondayisation for the six applicable holidays. Use this calculator for IRD PAYE deposit on the 20th, GST returns on the 28th, provisional tax instalments under the standard ratio option, and the March 31 financial year close for most New Zealand companies.

How New Zealand Business Days Are Defined

In New Zealand, business days are Monday through Friday, excluding the 12 public holidays under the Holidays Act 2003. Banks, the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX), and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's ESAS settlement system all observe the same schedule. Inland Revenue (IRD) deadlines, Companies Office filings, and Employment Court windows all run against this national set.

New Zealand Public Holidays

The 12 public holidays under the Holidays Act 2003 are:

  • New Year's Day (January 1, Mondayised)
  • Day after New Year's Day (January 2, Mondayised)

  • Good Friday (variable)

  • ANZAC Day (April 25, Mondayised since 2014)
  • Sovereign's Birthday (first Monday in June)
  • Matariki (variable, Friday between mid-June and mid-July)
  • Labour Day (fourth Monday in October)

Common Use Cases in New Zealand

New Zealand business-day cycles run against IRD PAYE deposit on the 20th of the following month, GST returns on the 28th, and the provisional tax three-instalment cycle (28 August, 15 January, 7 May) for March year-end taxpayers under the standard ratio option. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand operates ESAS as the wholesale RTGS system on bank business days. The Contract and Commercial Law Act 2017 sets default payment timing where contracts are silent, and personal-grievance referrals under the Employment Relations Act 2000 must be raised within 90 days of the act complained of; the Response Deadline Calculator handles that 90-day count against the Holidays Act 2003 calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are New Zealand's public holidays?
New Zealand observes 12 public holidays under the Holidays Act 2003: New Year's Day, Day after New Year's Day, Waitangi Day (February 6), Good Friday, Easter Monday, ANZAC Day (April 25), the Sovereign's Birthday (first Monday in June), Matariki (variable), Labour Day (fourth Monday in October), Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Provincial anniversary days are additional regional holidays that are not in this national set.
How does Mondayisation work?
The 2014 amendment to the Holidays Act 2003 introduced Mondayisation for six public holidays: New Year's Day, Day after New Year's Day, Waitangi Day, ANZAC Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. When any of these falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the observed holiday transfers to the following Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is already a public holiday). Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Sovereign's Birthday, Matariki, and Labour Day are always on a specific weekday and are not Mondayised.
When is Matariki?
Matariki was added as a public holiday in 2022 by the Te Kāhui o Matariki Public Holiday Act 2022. The date varies each year and is set by the Matariki Advisory Group based on the rising of the Pleiades star cluster in the pre-dawn sky and the lunar cycle. The dates always fall on a Friday between mid-June and mid-July. 2024-2029 dates: 28 June 2024, 20 June 2025, 10 July 2026, 25 June 2027, 14 June 2028, and 6 July 2029.
Why are provincial anniversary days not included?
Each New Zealand region observes a provincial anniversary day (Auckland Anniversary, Wellington Anniversary, Canterbury Anniversary, Otago Anniversary, and others), but these are statutory holidays only in their respective regions. This calculator uses the national-only set so it works as the conservative baseline for cross-region contracts. For region-specific contracts seated in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch, add the relevant anniversary date into the calculator's Advanced options.
How many business days are in a New Zealand working year?
New Zealand typically has around 249 to 251 working days per year after accounting for 11 to 12 weekday-falling public holidays (the exact count depends on which holidays land on weekdays after Mondayisation). The 2024-2029 working-day counts are available on the holidays-by-year pages linked below.
