public holidays in October 2027

Mon, Oct 25Labour Day

New Zealand October deadlines

Labour Day is the fourth Monday in October. Employers pay September's PAYE deductions by October 20, the quarterly fringe benefit tax return for July to September is due the same day, and GST for a period ending 30 September is due on October 28. Labour Day 2027 is Monday 25 October. Employment New Zealand lists Hawke's Bay Anniversary Day on Friday 22 October 2027, a provincial day that is not in this calculator's national data.

Those dates in 2027

Every date named above falls on a working day in 2027 under the New Zealand public calendar. That is worth checking rather than assuming: the same calendar date moves through the week from year to year, so a date that settles cleanly this year may not next year.

This table resolves weekdays and nothing else. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day is set by the instrument that creates it, and no shift rule is assumed here for any jurisdiction. The sources behind each calendar are listed in the source register.

New Zealand reporting cycles and business-day rules

Inland Revenue's provisional tax under the standard or estimation option falls due in three instalments for a 31 March balance date, on 28 August, 15 January and 7 May, so this month's count matters when one of those dates is near. The public holidays that close the count are the eleven national days in this calculator's data, and six of them can move off a weekend: section 45 of the Holidays Act 2003 moves New Year's Day, 2 January, Christmas Day and Boxing Day to the following Monday from a Saturday and the following Tuesday from a Sunday, and section 45A moves Waitangi Day and Anzac Day to the following Monday, in each case for an employee for whom the weekend day would not otherwise be a working day. From 6 August 2028 sections 59 and 60 of the Employment Leave Act 2026 carry the same rules. The count uses the Monday or Tuesday, the reading for a Monday-to-Friday week.

October 2027 working days compared by country

Working-day counts vary across countries because each country observes its own public holidays. The table below shows October 2027 under 11 of the site's 25 holiday calendars; the summary above gives New Zealand's own count.

How October 2027 compares year over year

October 2026 had 21 working days, so October 2027 has 1 fewer working day year over year. On the surrounding months, September 2027 has 22 working days and November 2027 has 22. Looking forward, October 2028 has 21 working days under the same New Zealand public holiday calendar.

Using this calculator in New Zealand

Count the 20 business days of October 2027 against Inland Revenue's provisional tax dates when a payment is near: under the standard or estimation option, a business with a 31 March balance date pays three instalments, on 28 August, 15 January and 7 May, and under the ratio option six. A count across Christmas and New Year can lose more weekdays than the calendar shows, because the Holidays Act 2003 moves Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and 2 January off a weekend for an employee who would not otherwise work that day, and from 6 August 2028 the Employment Leave Act 2026 carries the same rule.

How October 2027 is shaped

The headline count answers how many working days October 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the New Zealand public holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.

A 31-day month opening the final quarter

October runs 31 days and opens Q4, the last quarter of the calendar year, so everything deferred earlier arrives inside a period that begins here. It shares its weekday alignment with January in a common year. As a 31-day month it carries three weekdays five times, and which three is decided entirely by the day it opens on.

In October 2027 that comes to 20 working days across 31 calendar days, against 22 in September 2027 and 22 in November 2027.

The month opens on the last day of a working week

October 2027 starts on the final working day of a week. One working day stands between the 1st and the weekend, so the month's real momentum does not begin until the following week. This is the start that most compresses a monthly plan: the calendar has turned, but only one working day has passed before the first closure.

The month's first working day is Friday, October 1, and October 2027 carries 20 working days in total.

Five working stretches

October splits into five working stretches. That is the ordinary shape of a month whose only interruptions are its weekends, and it means the month's internal boundaries are all predictable a year in advance: nothing here depends on a holiday date moving.

The working days of October 2027 arrive in stretches of 1, 5, 5, 5, and 4 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from October 4 to October 8. A task needing more consecutive working days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.

The month is back-loaded. It opens with one consecutive day and closes with four, so the room is at the end rather than the start. That is the safer of the two imbalances, because a slip has somewhere to go, but it also makes the opening week a poor sample of the month.

Three weekdays occur five times

A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In October 2027 the three are Sunday, Friday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.

Only Friday among them is a working day, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.

One closure, and where it lands

October 2027 carries a single New Zealand public closure on a working day: Labour Day on Monday, October 25. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.

It sits directly beside a weekend rather than inside a working week, so it extends an existing break instead of creating a new one. That is the cheapest position a holiday can occupy: the month loses a day but keeps its shape.

16 working days pass before the closure and only 4 follow it. With the break past the midpoint, most of the month's capacity has already been spent when it arrives, so anything the closure displaces competes for a shrinking remainder.

The closures around this month

October 2027 carries one New Zealand public closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.

Looking outside the month, the last was Matariki on June 25, 2027, 98 calendar days before October began and the next is Christmas Day (observed) on December 27, 2027, 57 calendar days after it ends.

Across the whole of 2027 the New Zealand public calendar puts 11 closures on working days, of which one falls in October. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.

The month ends over a weekend

October 2027 ends on a Sunday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.

The last working day of October 2027 is Friday, October 29. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, October 27, four calendar days before the month closes.

The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. Two calendar days of October follow it with nothing settling on them.

The quarter opens here

October is the first month of Q4. An opening month sets the baseline the rest of the quarter is measured against, and it is the one month where a slip has two further months to be absorbed in. Quarterly targets divided evenly by three ignore the fact that the three months rarely carry equal working-day counts.

Across the whole quarter there are 63 working days, of which 20 fall in October. The other two months carry November 2027 with 22 and December 2027 with 21. It is the smallest of the three, so the quarter's capacity sits mostly in the other two months and a plan that spreads work evenly across the quarter will over-commit October.

The week's first working day is the scarcest

The first working day of the week is the one October gives least often. Anything anchored to the start of the working week (a weekly kickoff, a Monday-morning cutoff, a start-of-week batch) fires fewer times this month than the calendar count suggests, because a closure has taken one of them out.

Counted as worked rather than as occurring, October 2027 gives Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 4, and Friday 5. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.

Toward the short end of the year

October sits among the shorter working months of 2027 under the New Zealand public calendar. A month reaches this end of the ranking either by being short or by absorbing closures, and the two produce the same headline number while behaving differently: a closure fragments the month, a shorter calendar does not.

2027 carries 250 working days in total under the New Zealand public calendar. The longest month of the year is July 2027 with 22 and the shortest is February 2027 with 19, a spread of 3. October ranks 10th of the twelve with 20.

Inside the year's longest clear run

October 2027 sits inside the longest stretch of 2027 with no New Zealand public closure in it. Where a month falls relative to its country's closure clusters changes what the same working-day count is worth: an uninterrupted month inside a long clear run behaves differently from one of equal length wedged between two closures.

Across 2027 the New Zealand public closures fall 5 in Q1, 3 in Q2, 0 in Q3, and 3 in Q4. Every holiday in the New Zealand public data for 2027 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.

The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between June 25, 2027 and October 25, 2027, 122 calendar days with no New Zealand public closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.

Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern

Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the New Zealand public calendar is no exception.

2027 opens its New Zealand public closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2027 and ends them with Boxing Day (observed) on December 28, 2027. The densest month of the year is January 2027 with two closures on working days.

One working day fewer than last year

October 2027 has one working day fewer than October 2026: 20 against 21. On a monthly target that is roughly 5% less working time for the same calendar period, which is the size of gap that shows up as an unexplained miss rather than as a known constraint.

October opens 2026 on a Thursday, 2027 on a Friday, and 2028 on a Sunday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, October 2028 carries 21 working days.

Anchor dates that do not fall on working days

Three of the common monthly anchor dates in October 2027 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.

The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.

Net terms dated in October 2027

An invoice dated the 1st of October on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on October 31, 2027, which is not a working day under the New Zealand public calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.

Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the New Zealand calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many business days are in October 2027 under the New Zealand public holiday calendar?
October 2027 has 20 working days under the New Zealand public holiday calendar. The month spans 31 calendar days, of which 10 fall on a weekend and 1 is a New Zealand public holiday that lands on a weekday. The remaining 20 weekdays are countable as working days for invoicing, deadline tracking, and contract math.
Which New Zealand holidays affect October 2027?
October 2027 contains one New Zealand public holiday: Labour Day on Monday, October 25. The calculator skips it. Regional or industry-specific closures may add further non-working days for narrower contract definitions; layer them into the calculator's Advanced options if needed.
How does Mondayisation work?
Six public holidays are fixed to a calendar date and can be Mondayised: New Year's Day, the day after New Year's Day, Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Section 45 of the Holidays Act 2003 moves New Year's Day, 2 January, Christmas Day and Boxing Day from a Saturday to the following Monday and from a Sunday to the following Tuesday, and section 45A moves Waitangi Day and Anzac Day from either day to the following Monday, for an employee for whom the weekend day would not otherwise be a working day; for someone who would have worked it, the holiday stays on the weekend. The Employment Leave Act 2026 repeals the 2003 Act on 6 August 2028 and repeats both rules in sections 59 and 60. This calculator uses the Monday or Tuesday, the reading for a Monday-to-Friday week. Good Friday, Easter Monday, King's Birthday, Matariki and Labour Day always fall on a set weekday and are not Mondayised.
How is Matariki dated and why is it different from the other holidays?
Matariki has been a public holiday since 2022. Unlike the other holidays its date comes from a schedule: section 5 of the Te Kฤhui o Matariki Public Holiday Act 2022 makes each date in Schedule 1 a public holiday, 2022 to 2052, every one a Friday, among them 10 July 2026, 25 June 2027 and 14 July 2028. Te Papa explains how the Matariki Advisory Committee chose them, the Friday closest to the Tangaroa lunar period in the month of Pipiri, so Matariki lands between 20 June and 19 July.
Why does the business-day count vary year to year?
Two things shift the monthly count for New Zealand. First, the day of the week the first of the month lands on changes the count of each weekday. Second, New Zealand public holidays anchored to a fixed date shift their weekday across years. Some years a fixed-date holiday lands on a weekend; some countries shift the observance to an adjacent weekday and some absorb it into the weekend. October 2026 had 21 working days, so October 2027 has 1 fewer working day year over year.
When is the last working day of October 2027?
The last working day of October 2027 under the New Zealand public calendar is Friday, October 29. The month's last calendar day is Sunday, October 31, which is not a working day, so month-end processing has to happen two calendar days earlier than the calendar suggests. Counting back, the third-to-last working day is Wednesday, October 27.
How many working days in a row does October 2027 offer?
October 2027 has 20 working days in total, but they do not run consecutively. They arrive in five stretches of 1, 5, 5, 5, and 4 days, so the longest unbroken run is five days, from October 4 to October 8. No working day in the month is isolated between two closures.
