The years below have 260 to 261 Monday-to-Friday days each, depending on the weekday January 1 falls on and on leap years; once US federal holidays come out, the US totals run from 249 to 250. The exact figure moves from year to year because holidays fixed to a date drift across the week.

How many working days are in a year?

A year has 260, 261 or 262 Monday-to-Friday days, depending on the weekday January 1 falls on and on whether it is a leap year: 2025 has 261 and 2028 has 260. After the US federal holidays come out, the US totals for 2025 to 2028 run from 249 to 250. Other countries lose a different number of days to their own holidays; open a year page for each country's figure.

Why does the working-day count change from year to year?

Two things move it. The number of Monday-to-Friday days changes with the weekday January 1 falls on and with leap years. And holidays fixed to a date move across the week: on a calendar that does not move a weekend holiday, one that lands on a Saturday or Sunday costs no working day. The US calendar does move them. Federal employees on a Monday-to-Friday workweek take the Friday before a Saturday holiday and the Monday after a Sunday one, so those holidays still cost a day, except that a Saturday New Year's Day is taken on December 31 of the year before.

Do these totals include public holidays?

Yes. Each year page removes both weekends and the selected country's public holidays from the calendar, so the headline number counts that calendar's working days, not just weekdays. A holiday that only a state, a region or an employer observes is not in the calendar and is not taken off. The month-by-month table on each page shows where the holidays fall, so you can see which months carry the reductions.
