New Zealand February deadlines

Employers pay January's PAYE deductions by February 20, and the GST return and payment for a period ending 31 January are due on February 28. February 7 is when most people pay an income tax bill for the previous tax year. Waitangi Day, 6 February, moves to the following Monday when it falls on a Saturday or Sunday, for an employee who would not otherwise work that day. When a payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday, Inland Revenue needs the payment on or before the next working day. Waitangi Day 2027 is a Saturday, so this calculator closes Monday 8 February. February 7 is a Sunday followed by that holiday, so a tax bill is due by Tuesday 9 February; February 20 is a Saturday, so PAYE is due Monday 22 February, and February 28 is a Sunday, so GST is due Monday 1 March. Employment New Zealand lists the Auckland and Nelson anniversary days on Monday 1 February 2027.

Those dates in 2027

None of the dates named above falls on a working day in 2027 under the New Zealand public calendar. A fixed calendar date advances by one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, so which side of the working week it lands on changes on a four-year cycle rather than staying put.

New Zealand reporting cycles and business-day rules

Inland Revenue's provisional tax under the standard or estimation option falls due in three instalments for a 31 March balance date, on 28 August, 15 January and 7 May, so this month's count matters when one of those dates is near. The public holidays that close the count are the eleven national days in this calculator's data, and six of them can move off a weekend: section 45 of the Holidays Act 2003 moves New Year's Day, 2 January, Christmas Day and Boxing Day to the following Monday from a Saturday and the following Tuesday from a Sunday, and section 45A moves Waitangi Day and Anzac Day to the following Monday, in each case for an employee for whom the weekend day would not otherwise be a working day. From 6 August 2028 sections 59 and 60 of the Employment Leave Act 2026 carry the same rules. The count uses the Monday or Tuesday, the reading for a Monday-to-Friday week.

February 2027 working days compared by country

Working-day counts vary across countries because each country observes its own public holidays. The table below shows February 2027 under 11 of the site's 25 holiday calendars; the summary above gives New Zealand's own count.

How February 2027 compares year over year

February 2026 also had 19 working days, so the working capacity is unchanged year over year. On the surrounding months, January 2027 has 19 working days and March 2027 has 21. Looking forward, February 2028 has 20 working days under the same New Zealand public holiday calendar.

Using this calculator in New Zealand

Count the 19 business days of February 2027 against Inland Revenue's provisional tax dates when a payment is near: under the standard or estimation option, a business with a 31 March balance date pays three instalments, on 28 August, 15 January and 7 May, and under the ratio option six. A count across Christmas and New Year can lose more weekdays than the calendar shows, because the Holidays Act 2003 moves Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and 2 January off a weekend for an employee who would not otherwise work that day, and from 6 August 2028 the Employment Leave Act 2026 carries the same rule.

How February 2027 is shaped

The headline count answers how many working days February 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the New Zealand public holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.

The only month whose length changes

February is the shortest month and the only one whose length is not fixed, running 28 days in a common year and 29 in a leap year. A 28-day February is exactly four seven-day cycles, which makes it the only month capable of containing precisely four of every weekday. February 2027 runs 28 days, so it has that perfectly regular shape.

In February 2027 that comes to 19 working days across 28 calendar days, against 19 in January 2027 and 21 in March 2027.

A clean start to the working week

February 2027 opens on the first working day of the week. That is the alignment where the month's own numbering and the working week agree: week one of the month is a whole working week that belongs entirely to February, with nothing borrowed from the month before. Of the 5 possible starts this is the only one where "the first week" and "the first 5 working days" describe the same span.

The opening stretch runs from Monday, February 1 to February 5, five working days before the first break. February 2027 carries 19 working days in total, so that opening block is 26% of the month's working capacity.

How the working days break up

The working days of February 2027 fall into four separate stretches. The count of stretches matters more than it looks: a month's total is the sum of its runs, but a deliverable that needs consecutive days is limited by the longest single run, and the two numbers move independently.

The working days of February 2027 arrive in stretches of 5, 4, 5, and 5 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from February 1 to February 5. A task needing more consecutive working days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.

The month is balanced end to end. Its opening and closing stretches are the same length, five days each, so work pushed from the start of February to its end finds the same amount of room it left behind. That symmetry is the exception rather than the rule.

The only perfectly regular month

A 28-day February is exactly four seven-day cycles, so every weekday occurs four times and no weekday is over-represented. It is the only month of the year that can be perfectly regular, and it means February's working-day count in a common year depends on nothing but its holidays: the weekday alignment cannot change the answer.

Only Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday among them are working days, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.

One closure, and where it lands

February 2027 carries a single New Zealand public closure on a working day: Waitangi Day (observed) on Monday, February 8. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.

It sits directly beside a weekend rather than inside a working week, so it extends an existing break instead of creating a new one. That is the cheapest position a holiday can occupy: the month loses a day but keeps its shape.

five working days pass before the closure and 14 follow it, which puts the break just short of the month's midpoint. A closure near the middle divides the month into two usable halves rather than trimming one end of it.

The closures around this month

February 2027 carries one New Zealand public closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.

Looking outside the month, the last was Day after New Year's Day (observed) on January 4, 2027, 28 calendar days before February began and the next is Good Friday on March 26, 2027, 26 calendar days after it ends.

Across the whole of 2027 the New Zealand public calendar puts 11 closures on working days, of which one falls in February. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.

The month ends over a weekend

February 2027 ends on a Sunday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.

The last working day of February 2027 is Friday, February 26. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, February 24, four calendar days before the month closes.

The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. Two calendar days of February follow it with nothing settling on them.

The middle month of the quarter

February is the middle month of Q1. Middle months carry the least visibility in a quarterly cycle: the opening month sets expectations and the closing month is where they are settled, so a shortfall here is the one most likely to be noticed late.

Across the whole quarter there are 59 working days, of which 19 fall in February. The other two months carry January 2027 with 19 and March 2027 with 21. It is the smallest of the three, so the quarter's capacity sits mostly in the other two months and a plan that spreads work evenly across the quarter will over-commit February.

The week's first working day is the scarcest

The first working day of the week is the one February gives least often. Anything anchored to the start of the working week (a weekly kickoff, a Monday-morning cutoff, a start-of-week batch) fires fewer times this month than the calendar count suggests, because a closure has taken one of them out.

Counted as worked rather than as occurring, February 2027 gives Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 4, and Friday 4. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.

One of the year's shortest working months

No month of 2027 carries fewer working days than February under the New Zealand public calendar. Two forces set a month's position in that ranking, its length and its closures, and they can either compound or cancel: a long month with several closures and a short month with none can land on the same count.

2027 carries 250 working days in total under the New Zealand public calendar. The longest month of the year is July 2027 with 22 and the shortest is February 2027 with 19, a spread of 3. February ranks 12th of the twelve with 19.

New Zealand closures across the year

A month's working-day count only means something against the country's whole calendar. Two countries that share a weekend and happen to have the same closure-free month can still run very different years, and New Zealand is placed as follows.

Across 2027 the New Zealand public closures fall 5 in Q1, 3 in Q2, 0 in Q3, and 3 in Q4. Every holiday in the New Zealand public data for 2027 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.

The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between June 25, 2027 and October 25, 2027, 122 calendar days with no New Zealand public closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.

Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern

Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the New Zealand public calendar is no exception.

2027 opens its New Zealand public closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2027 and ends them with Boxing Day (observed) on December 28, 2027. The densest month of the year is January 2027 with two closures on working days.

The same count as last year

February 2027 and February 2026 carry the same number of working days, 19 in each. An unchanged total does not mean an unchanged month: the working days sit on different dates and break into different stretches, so a schedule copied forward date by date will not line up even though the capacity has not moved.

February opens 2026 on a Sunday, 2027 on a Monday, and 2028 on a Tuesday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, February 2028 carries 20 working days.

Where the month's anchor dates fall

Two of the common monthly anchor dates in February 2027 land outside the working week or on a closure. The table below resolves each one against the New Zealand public calendar, together with the first working day on or after it.

DateWeekdayStatus under the New Zealand public calendarFirst working day on or after
February 1MondayWorking dayFebruary 1
February 5FridayWorking dayFebruary 5

February 15MondayWorking dayFebruary 15
February 20SaturdayWeekendFebruary 22, 2027
February 25ThursdayWorking dayFebruary 25
February 28SundayWeekendMarch 1, 2027

The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.

Net terms dated in February 2027

An invoice dated the 1st of February on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on March 3, 2027, a working day under the New Zealand public calendar. Terms counted in calendar days move independently of the working week, so the same term written on two consecutive months can settle cleanly in one and roll across a closure in the other.

Invoice dateNet 30, calendar daysNet 60, calendar days
Dated February 1March 3, 2027April 2, 2027
Dated February 15March 17, 2027April 16, 2027
Dated February 28March 30, 2027April 29, 2027

Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the New Zealand calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many business days are in February 2027 under the New Zealand public holiday calendar?
February 2027 has 19 working days under the New Zealand public holiday calendar. The month spans 28 calendar days, of which 8 fall on a weekend and 1 is a New Zealand public holiday that lands on a weekday. The remaining 19 weekdays are countable as working days for invoicing, deadline tracking, and contract math.
Which New Zealand holidays affect February 2027?
February 2027 contains one New Zealand public holiday: Waitangi Day (observed) on Monday, February 8. The calculator skips it. Regional or industry-specific closures may add further non-working days for narrower contract definitions; layer them into the calculator's Advanced options if needed.
How does Mondayisation work?
Six public holidays are fixed to a calendar date and can be Mondayised: New Year's Day, the day after New Year's Day, Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Section 45 of the Holidays Act 2003 moves New Year's Day, 2 January, Christmas Day and Boxing Day from a Saturday to the following Monday and from a Sunday to the following Tuesday, and section 45A moves Waitangi Day and Anzac Day from either day to the following Monday, for an employee for whom the weekend day would not otherwise be a working day; for someone who would have worked it, the holiday stays on the weekend. The Employment Leave Act 2026 repeals the 2003 Act on 6 August 2028 and repeats both rules in sections 59 and 60. This calculator uses the Monday or Tuesday, the reading for a Monday-to-Friday week. Good Friday, Easter Monday, King's Birthday, Matariki and Labour Day always fall on a set weekday and are not Mondayised.
How is Matariki dated and why is it different from the other holidays?
Matariki has been a public holiday since 2022. Unlike the other holidays its date comes from a schedule: section 5 of the Te Kฤhui o Matariki Public Holiday Act 2022 makes each date in Schedule 1 a public holiday, 2022 to 2052, every one a Friday, among them 10 July 2026, 25 June 2027 and 14 July 2028. Te Papa explains how the Matariki Advisory Committee chose them, the Friday closest to the Tangaroa lunar period in the month of Pipiri, so Matariki lands between 20 June and 19 July.
Why does the business-day count vary year to year?
Two things shift the monthly count for New Zealand. First, the day of the week the first of the month lands on changes the count of each weekday. Second, New Zealand public holidays anchored to a fixed date shift their weekday across years. Some years a fixed-date holiday lands on a weekend; some countries shift the observance to an adjacent weekday and some absorb it into the weekend. February 2026 also had 19 working days, so the working capacity is unchanged year over year.
When is the last working day of February 2027?
The last working day of February 2027 under the New Zealand public calendar is Friday, February 26. The month's last calendar day is Sunday, February 28, which is not a working day, so month-end processing has to happen two calendar days earlier than the calendar suggests. Counting back, the third-to-last working day is Wednesday, February 24.
How many working days in a row does February 2027 offer?
February 2027 has 19 working days in total, but they do not run consecutively. They arrive in four stretches of 5, 4, 5, and 5 days, so the longest unbroken run is five days, from February 1 to February 5. No working day in the month is isolated between two closures.
