India January deadlines
Republic Day, 26 January, is one of the three national holidays the Department of Personnel and Training lists as compulsory for every Central Government office. A monthly GST taxpayer files GSTR-3B for December by January 20 under rule 61 of the CGST Rules, 2017, and a taxpayer in the quarterly (QRMP) scheme files the October to December return by January 22 or January 24, depending on its state or union territory. An employer remits provident fund contributions for December within fifteen days of the close of the month, by January 15, under paragraph 28 of the Employees' Provident Funds Scheme, 2026. Republic Day 2027 is a Tuesday. January 20 is a Wednesday.

India reporting cycles and business-day rules
This calculator counts Monday to Friday and leaves out the 14 holidays that the Department of Personnel and Training's Office Memorandum on the 2027 holidays (F.No.12/2/2023-JCA, dated 16 July 2026) lists as compulsory for Central Government administrative offices, plus Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti. Paragraph 3.2 of that memorandum allows no substitute holiday when a festival holiday falls on a weekly off or another non-working day, or when more than one festival falls on the same day, and the calculator adds none. Under rule 61 of the CGST Rules, 2017 a monthly GSTR-3B is due on or before the 20th of the following month, and a quarterly one on or before the 22nd or the 24th of the month after the quarter, depending on the state or union territory of the principal place of business. Section 408(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 has advance tax paid in four instalments, due on or before 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March. These pages give those dates as the rule and the section state them and adjust none for a Sunday or a holiday.

How January 2027 compares year over year
January 2026 had 21 working days, so January 2027 has 1 fewer working day year over year. On the surrounding months, December 2026 has 22 working days and February 2027 has 20. Looking forward, January 2028 has 20 working days under the same Indian Central Government holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in India
The 20 working days in January 2027 are the month's Monday-to-Friday days less the dates in this calculator's data: the 14 holidays that are compulsory for Central Government administrative offices and Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti. For a project or contract timeline with a Central Government office, add the three further days that apply to that office under Advanced options. Bank holidays are not this list: the Reserve Bank of India's holiday page marks each holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act separately for each of its regional offices, so for a count that follows a bank, read that office's list.

How January 2027 is shaped
The headline count answers how many working days January 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the Indian Central Government holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
The month that opens the year and the quarter together
January is one of only four months that begins a quarter, and the only one that begins a calendar year at the same time. Its 31 days are the joint longest, and its first day is the single date on which the largest number of annual cycles reset at once. That concentration is the reason a January working-day count is worth checking rather than assuming: every cycle that starts here inherits whatever the month's alignment gives it.
In January 2027 that comes to 20 working days across 31 calendar days, against 22 in December 2026 and 20 in February 2027.
The month opens on the last day of a working week
January 2027 starts on the final working day of a week. One working day stands between the 1st and the weekend, so the month's real momentum does not begin until the following week. This is the start that most compresses a monthly plan: the calendar has turned, but only one working day has passed before the first closure.
The month's first working day is Friday, January 1, and January 2027 carries 20 working days in total.
One working day stands alone
One working day in January 2027 is walled in on both sides. Monday, January 25 sits between the Saturday and Sunday weekend and Republic Day, with no adjacent working day on either side. That single day still counts toward the month's total, but it cannot carry work that needs a second consecutive day, and anything that slips on it slips across a full closure rather than overnight.
The working days of January 2027 arrive in stretches of 1, 5, 5, 5, 1, and 3 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from January 4 to January 8. A task needing more consecutive working days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is back-loaded. It opens with one consecutive day and closes with three, so the room is at the end rather than the start. That is the safer of the two imbalances, because a slip has somewhere to go, but it also makes the opening week a poor sample of the month.
Three weekdays occur five times
A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In January 2027 the three are Sunday, Friday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.
Only Friday among them is a working day, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.
One closure, and where it lands
January 2027 carries a single Indian Central Government closure on a working day: Republic Day on Tuesday, January 26. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.
Placed where it is, the closure also strands a working day: the run structure above shows a stretch of exactly one. That is the expensive shape for a single holiday, because it removes a day and devalues another.
17 working days pass before the closure and only 3 follow it. With the break past the midpoint, most of the month's capacity has already been spent when it arrives, so anything the closure displaces competes for a shrinking remainder.
The closures around this month
January 2027 carries one Indian Central Government closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was Christmas Day on December 25, 2026, 7 calendar days before January began and the next is Eid ul-Fitr on March 10, 2027, 38 calendar days after it ends.
Across the whole of 2027 the Indian Central Government calendar puts nine closures on working days, of which one falls in January. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
The month ends over a weekend
January 2027 ends on a Sunday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.
The last working day of January 2027 is Friday, January 29. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, January 27, four calendar days before the month closes.
The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. Two calendar days of January follow it with nothing settling on them.
The quarter opens here
January is the first month of Q1. An opening month sets the baseline the rest of the quarter is measured against, and it is the one month where a slip has two further months to be absorbed in. Quarterly targets divided evenly by three ignore the fact that the three months rarely carry equal working-day counts.
Across the whole quarter there are 61 working days, of which 20 fall in January. The other two months carry February 2027 with 20 and March 2027 with 21. It sits between the other two, which makes it the month where a quarterly plan is least likely to be thrown off by the calendar alone.
The week's second working day is the scarcest
The second working day of the week is the one January gives least often. Weekly cycles that run one day behind the start of the week, which is where most reporting handovers sit, lose an occurrence relative to the rest.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, January 2027 gives Monday 4, Tuesday 3, Wednesday 4, Thursday 4, and Friday 5. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
Where the month sits in the year
January sits in the middle of 2027 by working-day count under the Indian Central Government calendar. The middle of that ranking is where a month's total is least informative on its own, because a mid-ranked month can be a long month carrying closures or a short one carrying none, and the two need different plans.
2027 carries 252 working days in total under the Indian Central Government calendar. The longest month of the year is December 2027 with 23 and the shortest is May 2027 with 19, a spread of 4. January ranks 8th of the twelve with 20.
India closures across the year
A month's working-day count only means something against the country's whole calendar. Two countries that share a weekend and happen to have the same closure-free month can still run very different years, and India is placed as follows.
Across 2027 the Indian Central Government closures fall 3 in Q1, 5 in Q2, 0 in Q3, and 1 in Q4. A further five holidays land on the Saturday and Sunday weekend and cost no working day at all, which is why a country's holiday count and its working-day loss are different numbers.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between June 16, 2027 and October 29, 2027, 135 calendar days with no Indian Central Government closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the Indian Central Government calendar is no exception.
2027 opens its Indian Central Government closures with Republic Day on January 26, 2027 and ends them with Diwali on October 29, 2027. The densest month of the year is March 2027 with two closures on working days.
One working day fewer than last year
January 2027 has one working day fewer than January 2026: 20 against 21. On a monthly target that is roughly 5% less working time for the same calendar period, which is the size of gap that shows up as an unexplained miss rather than as a known constraint.
January opens 2026 on a Thursday, 2027 on a Friday, and 2028 on a Saturday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, January 2028 carries 20 working days.
Where the month's anchor dates fall
Two of the common monthly anchor dates in January 2027 land outside the working week or on a closure. The table below resolves each one against the Indian Central Government calendar, together with the first working day on or after it.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the Indian Central Government calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Friday | Working day | January 1 |
| January 5 | Tuesday | Working day | January 5 |
| January 10 | Sunday | Weekend | January 11, 2027 |
| January 15 | Friday | Working day | January 15 |
| January 20 | Wednesday | Working day | January 20 |
| January 25 | Monday | Working day | January 25 |
| January 31 | Sunday | Weekend | February 1, 2027 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in January 2027
An invoice dated the 1st of January on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on January 31, 2027, which is not a working day under the Indian Central Government calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated January 1 | January 31, 2027 (rolls to February 1, 2027) | March 2, 2027 |
| Dated January 15 | February 14, 2027 (rolls to February 15, 2027) | March 16, 2027 |
| Dated January 31 | March 2, 2027 | April 1, 2027 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the India calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
