United Kingdom January deadlines
January 31 is the deadline for the online Self Assessment return and for the balancing payment on the previous tax year, both at 11:59pm. When the payment deadline falls on a weekend or bank holiday, HMRC asks that the payment reach it on the last working day before, unless it is made by Faster Payments or by debit or credit card. The Full Payment Submission goes to HMRC on or before each payday, and an employer who pays monthly owes the PAYE bill for the tax month ending January 5 by January 22, or by January 19 if it is paid by cheque through the post. For England and Wales, gov.uk lists one bank holiday in January: New Year's Day, or a substitute weekday when January 1 falls on a weekend. In Scotland, Schedule 1 to the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 adds a bank holiday for January 2.

Those dates in 2027
Three of the dates named above do not fall on a working day in 2027 under the England and Wales bank calendar. A fixed calendar date advances through the week year by year, so this resolution holds for 2027 only.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the England and Wales bank calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Friday | Closed: New Year's Day | January 4, 2027 |

| January 19 | Tuesday | Working day | |
| January 22 | Friday | Working day | |
| January 31 | Sunday | Weekend | February 1, 2027 |
This table resolves weekdays and nothing else. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day is set by the instrument that creates it, and no shift rule is assumed here for any jurisdiction. The sources behind each calendar are listed in the source register.

United Kingdom reporting cycles and business-day rules
HMRC's guidance gives PAYE two separate dates. An employer sends the Full Payment Submission on or before its employees' payday, even if it pays HMRC quarterly instead of monthly, with the exceptions HMRC lists for sending one after payday. An employer that pays monthly pays its PAYE bill by the 22nd of the next tax month, and a cheque sent through the post must reach HMRC by the 19th. A tax month starts on the 6th. The Bank of England describes the CHAPS system as usually open from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, excluding bank or public holidays in England and Wales, and says customer payments must be submitted by 5.40pm. Section 442 of the Companies Act 2006 gives a private company nine months after the end of the relevant accounting reference period to file its accounts, with other periods for a first accounting reference period of more than twelve months and for a shortened one. Section 443 counts that period in months: it ends with the date in the ninth following month that corresponds to the last day of the reference period, or with the last day of that month where the reference period ends on the last day of a month.

How January 2027 compares year over year
January 2026 had 21 working days, so January 2027 has 1 fewer working day year over year. On the surrounding months, December 2026 has 21 working days and February 2027 has 20. Looking forward, January 2028 has 20 working days under the same England and Wales bank holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in United Kingdom
With the bank holidays of England and Wales left out, January 2027 has 20 working days from Monday to Friday. Where your contract counts a period in business days, the UK calculator on this site counts it with the bank holidays of England and Wales. Court time limits under the Civil Procedure Rules are a separate matter. Rule 2.8 computes a period expressed as a number of days as clear days, which leaves out the day on which the period begins and, if the end of the period is defined by reference to an event, the day of that event. Where the specified period is 5 days or less, a Saturday, Sunday, Bank Holiday, Christmas Day or Good Friday in it does not count. For VAT, HMRC gives the deadline for submitting a return online, which is also the deadline for paying, as usually one calendar month and 7 days after the end of an accounting period, and says the return and the payment must reach it on or before the deadline even if it is on a weekend or bank holiday.

How January 2027 is shaped
The headline count answers how many working days January 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the England and Wales bank holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
The month that opens the year and the quarter together
January is one of only four months that begins a quarter, and the only one that begins a calendar year at the same time. Its 31 days are the joint longest, and its first day is the single date on which the largest number of annual cycles reset at once. That concentration is the reason a January working-day count is worth checking rather than assuming: every cycle that starts here inherits whatever the month's alignment gives it.
In January 2027 that comes to 20 working days across 31 calendar days, against 21 in December 2026 and 20 in February 2027.
The month opens on a closure
January 2027 begins on a public holiday. New Year's Day falls on the 1st, which is a Friday this year, so the calendar month and the working month start on different dates. Any obligation written as "the first of the month" and any obligation written as "the first working day" point at different days in January 2027, and a schedule that treats them as interchangeable is wrong by at least one day here.
The month's first working day is Monday, January 4, and January 2027 carries 20 working days in total.
How the working days break up
The working days of January 2027 fall into four separate stretches. The count of stretches matters more than it looks: a month's total is the sum of its runs, but a deliverable that needs consecutive days is limited by the longest single run, and the two numbers move independently.
The working days of January 2027 arrive in stretches of 5, 5, 5, and 5 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from January 4 to January 8. A task needing more consecutive working days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is balanced end to end. Its opening and closing stretches are the same length, five days each, so work pushed from the start of January to its end finds the same amount of room it left behind. That symmetry is the exception rather than the rule.
Three weekdays occur five times
A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In January 2027 the three are Sunday, Friday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.
Only Friday among them is a working day, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.
One closure, and where it lands
January 2027 carries a single England and Wales bank closure on a working day: New Year's Day on Friday, January 1. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.
It sits directly beside a weekend rather than inside a working week, so it extends an existing break instead of creating a new one. That is the cheapest position a holiday can occupy: the month loses a day but keeps its shape.
The closure arrives before any working day has passed, so January is interrupted before it has started and the whole of its 20 remaining working days sit after the break.
The closures around this month
January 2027 carries one England and Wales bank closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was Boxing Day (observed) on December 28, 2026, 4 calendar days before January began and the next is Good Friday on March 26, 2027, 54 calendar days after it ends.
Across the whole of 2027 the England and Wales bank calendar puts eight closures on working days, of which one falls in January. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
The month ends over a weekend
January 2027 ends on a Sunday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.
The last working day of January 2027 is Friday, January 29. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, January 27, four calendar days before the month closes.
The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. Two calendar days of January follow it with nothing settling on them.
The quarter opens here
January is the first month of Q1. An opening month sets the baseline the rest of the quarter is measured against, and it is the one month where a slip has two further months to be absorbed in. Quarterly targets divided evenly by three ignore the fact that the three months rarely carry equal working-day counts.
Across the whole quarter there are 61 working days, of which 20 fall in January. The other two months carry February 2027 with 20 and March 2027 with 21. It sits between the other two, which makes it the month where a quarterly plan is least likely to be thrown off by the calendar alone.
Every working weekday occurs the same number of times
January 2027 works each weekday of its week the same number of times. That is the flat case, and it is the only one where a weekly recurring commitment costs the same whichever weekday it is pinned to. It happens when the month's length and its closures happen to cancel, not because the month is regular: the calendar census above and this one can agree for quite different reasons.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, January 2027 gives Monday 4, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 4, and Friday 4. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
Toward the short end of the year
January sits among the shorter working months of 2027 under the England and Wales bank calendar. A month reaches this end of the ranking either by being short or by absorbing closures, and the two produce the same headline number while behaving differently: a closure fragments the month, a shorter calendar does not.
2027 carries 253 working days in total under the England and Wales bank calendar. The longest month of the year is April 2027 with 22 and the shortest is May 2027 with 19, a spread of 3. January ranks 10th of the twelve with 20.
United Kingdom closures across the year
A month's working-day count only means something against the country's whole calendar. Two countries that share a weekend and happen to have the same closure-free month can still run very different years, and United Kingdom is placed as follows.
Across 2027 the England and Wales bank closures fall 3 in Q1, 2 in Q2, 1 in Q3, and 2 in Q4. Every holiday in the England and Wales bank data for 2027 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between August 30, 2027 and December 27, 2027, 119 calendar days with no England and Wales bank closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the England and Wales bank calendar is no exception.
2027 opens its England and Wales bank closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2027 and ends them with Boxing Day (observed) on December 28, 2027. The densest month of the year is March 2027 with two closures on working days.
One working day fewer than last year
January 2027 has one working day fewer than January 2026: 20 against 21. On a monthly target that is roughly 5% less working time for the same calendar period, which is the size of gap that shows up as an unexplained miss rather than as a known constraint.
January opens 2026 on a Thursday, 2027 on a Friday, and 2028 on a Saturday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, January 2028 carries 20 working days.
Anchor dates that do not fall on working days
Three of the common monthly anchor dates in January 2027 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the England and Wales bank calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Friday | Closed: New Year's Day | January 4, 2027 |
| January 5 | Tuesday | Working day | January 5 |
| January 10 | Sunday | Weekend | January 11, 2027 |
| January 15 | Friday | Working day | January 15 |
| January 20 | Wednesday | Working day | January 20 |
| January 25 | Monday | Working day | January 25 |
| January 31 | Sunday | Weekend | February 1, 2027 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in January 2027
An invoice dated the 1st of January on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on January 31, 2027, which is not a working day under the England and Wales bank calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated January 1 | January 31, 2027 (rolls to February 1, 2027) | March 2, 2027 |
| Dated January 15 | February 14, 2027 (rolls to February 15, 2027) | March 16, 2027 |
| Dated January 31 | March 2, 2027 | April 1, 2027 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the United Kingdom calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
