United States January deadlines
January is the heaviest month of the US tax year for finance and HR teams. Form W-2 must reach employees and the Social Security Administration by January 31, and Form 1099-NEC must reach contractors and the IRS on the same date. Both roll to the next business day when January 31 falls at a weekend, which is why the date printed on IRS instructions moves from year to year. Two federal holidays sit in the month, so the working month is shorter than it looks.

Those dates in 2027
None of the dates named above falls on a working day in 2027 under the US federal calendar. A fixed calendar date advances by one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, so which side of the working week it lands on changes on a four-year cycle rather than staying put.

United States reporting cycles and business-day rules
Periods under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure are not counted in business days. Rule 6(a)(1) excludes the day of the event that triggers the period and counts every day after it, including intermediate Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays; when the last day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the period runs to the end of the next day that is none of those. Before the 2009 amendment the rule left intermediate Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays out of periods shorter than 11 days, and that exclusion no longer applies. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, this calculator leaves out the Friday before it, which 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) makes the holiday for federal employees on a Monday-to-Friday workweek; the Federal Reserve Banks stay open that Friday. Estimated tax payments of a corporation are due on the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 12th months of its tax year, which for a calendar-year corporation is April 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15. IRS Publication 509 states the general rule that an act due on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday is timely on the next day that is none of those, and by legal holiday it means any legal holiday in the District of Columbia.

How January 2027 compares year over year
January 2026 had 20 business days, so January 2027 has 1 fewer working day year over year. On the surrounding months, December 2026 has 22 business days and February 2027 has 19. Looking forward, January 2028 has 20 business days under the same US federal holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in United States
The 19 business days in January 2027 are the count to use for invoice due dates, contract deadlines and SLA windows stated in business days. Federal contracts under the FAR count in calendar days, because FAR 2.101 defines a day as a calendar day unless otherwise specified. For an invoice payment, FAR 32.904(b)(1) sets the due date at the later of the 30th day after the designated billing office receives a proper invoice and the 30th day after government acceptance of the supplies or services. Paragraphs (c) through (f) of the same section set other dates for architect-engineer, construction, cost-reimbursement service and food contracts.

How January 2027 is shaped
The headline count answers how many business days January 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the US federal holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
The month that opens the year and the quarter together
January is one of only four months that begins a quarter, and the only one that begins a calendar year at the same time. Its 31 days are the joint longest, and its first day is the single date on which the largest number of annual cycles reset at once. That concentration is the reason a January working-day count is worth checking rather than assuming: every cycle that starts here inherits whatever the month's alignment gives it.
In January 2027 that comes to 19 business days across 31 calendar days, against 22 in December 2026 and 19 in February 2027.
The month opens on a closure
January 2027 begins on a public holiday. New Year's Day falls on the 1st, which is a Friday this year, so the calendar month and the working month start on different dates. Any obligation written as "the first of the month" and any obligation written as "the first business day" point at different days in January 2027, and a schedule that treats them as interchangeable is wrong by at least one day here.
The month's first working day is Monday, January 4, and January 2027 carries 19 business days in total.
How the working days break up
The working days of January 2027 fall into four separate stretches. The count of stretches matters more than it looks: a month's total is the sum of its runs, but a deliverable that needs consecutive days is limited by the longest single run, and the two numbers move independently.
The working days of January 2027 arrive in stretches of 5, 5, 4, and 5 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from January 4 to January 8. A task needing more consecutive business days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is balanced end to end. Its opening and closing stretches are the same length, five days each, so work pushed from the start of January to its end finds the same amount of room it left behind. That symmetry is the exception rather than the rule.
Three weekdays occur five times
A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In January 2027 the three are Sunday, Friday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.
Only Friday among them is a working day, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.
Two closures in the month
Two US federal holidays fall on working days in January 2027: New Year's Day on Friday, January 1 and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18. Two closures remove two days from the total, but their effect on the month's usable structure depends on how far apart they are.
They sit 17 calendar days apart, one in each half of the month, so January is interrupted twice at roughly even spacing rather than once heavily. That spreads the loss but leaves no long uninterrupted stretch in either half.
The closure arrives before any working day has passed, so January is interrupted before it has started and the whole of its 19 remaining business days sit after the break.
The closures around this month
January 2027 carries two US federal closures of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was Christmas Day on December 25, 2026, 7 calendar days before January began and the next is Presidents' Day on February 15, 2027, 15 calendar days after it ends.
Across the whole of 2027 the US federal calendar puts 12 closures on working days, of which two fall in January. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
The month ends over a weekend
January 2027 ends on a Sunday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.
The last working day of January 2027 is Friday, January 29. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, January 27, four calendar days before the month closes.
The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. Two calendar days of January follow it with nothing settling on them.
The quarter opens here
January is the first month of Q1. An opening month sets the baseline the rest of the quarter is measured against, and it is the one month where a slip has two further months to be absorbed in. Quarterly targets divided evenly by three ignore the fact that the three months rarely carry equal working-day counts.
Across the whole quarter there are 61 business days, of which 19 fall in January. The other two months carry February 2027 with 19 and March 2027 with 23. It sits between the other two, which makes it the month where a quarterly plan is least likely to be thrown off by the calendar alone.
The week's first working day is the scarcest
The first working day of the week is the one January gives least often. Anything anchored to the start of the working week (a weekly kickoff, a Monday-morning cutoff, a start-of-week batch) fires fewer times this month than the calendar count suggests, because a closure has taken one of them out.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, January 2027 gives Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 4, and Friday 4. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
Toward the short end of the year
January sits among the shorter working months of 2027 under the US federal calendar. A month reaches this end of the ranking either by being short or by absorbing closures, and the two produce the same headline number while behaving differently: a closure fragments the month, a shorter calendar does not.
2027 carries 249 business days in total under the US federal calendar. The longest month of the year is March 2027 with 23 and the shortest is February 2027 with 19, a spread of 4. January ranks 11th of the twelve with 19.
Inside one of the year's denser months
January 2027 carries more than one US federal closure, which puts it among the year's denser months. Closures are never spread evenly across a year, so a month's own count says as much about the country's calendar as about the month.
Across 2027 the US federal closures fall 3 in Q1, 2 in Q2, 2 in Q3, and 5 in Q4. Every holiday in the US federal data for 2027 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between February 15, 2027 and May 31, 2027, 105 calendar days with no US federal closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the US federal calendar is no exception.
2027 opens its US federal closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2027 and ends them with New Year's Day 2028 (observed) on December 31, 2027. The densest month of the year is January 2027 with two closures on working days.
One working day fewer than last year
January 2027 has one business day fewer than January 2026: 19 against 20. On a monthly target that is roughly 5% less working time for the same calendar period, which is the size of gap that shows up as an unexplained miss rather than as a known constraint.
January opens 2026 on a Thursday, 2027 on a Friday, and 2028 on a Saturday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, January 2028 carries 20 business days.
Anchor dates that do not fall on working days
Three of the common monthly anchor dates in January 2027 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the US federal calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Friday | Closed: New Year's Day | January 4, 2027 |
| January 5 | Tuesday | Working day | January 5 |
| January 10 | Sunday | Weekend | January 11, 2027 |
| January 15 | Friday | Working day | January 15 |
| January 20 | Wednesday | Working day | January 20 |
| January 25 | Monday | Working day | January 25 |
| January 31 | Sunday | Weekend | February 1, 2027 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in January 2027
An invoice dated the 1st of January on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on January 31, 2027, which is not a working day under the US federal calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated January 1 | January 31, 2027 (rolls to February 1, 2027) | March 2, 2027 |
| Dated January 15 | February 14, 2027 (rolls to February 16, 2027) | March 16, 2027 |
| Dated January 31 | March 2, 2027 | April 1, 2027 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the United States calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
