How Many Business Days Are in a Month?
On the US federal calendar, every month from 2024 to 2029 has between 18 and 23 business days. The exact count depends on two things: how many weekdays fall within the month, and how many federal holiday closures land on those weekdays. Because a month starts on a different weekday each year, the count for the same month moves from year to year.
Why the Count Varies
A month's length decides how many weekdays it can hold. Four full weeks give 20 weekdays, and the days beyond them add more only when they fall on a Monday to Friday. A 28-day February always has exactly 20 weekdays, a 29-day February has 20 or 21, a 30-day month 20 to 22, and a 31-day month 21 to 23, depending on the weekday the month starts on.
Each federal holiday on a weekday then takes one away. Most federal employees have a holiday that falls on a Saturday on the Friday before, and one that falls on a Sunday on the Monday after, so it still removes a weekday. That can move a holiday into another month: when New Year's Day falls on a Saturday, that Friday is 31 December of the year before.
Two months of the same year can therefore end up with the same count, and the same month can have a different count in two different years.

Total for 2026: 250 business days. The leanest months are February and November with 19, and the fullest are March, April, July, and December with 22.
How to Count Business Days in a Month Yourself
Start with the total number of days in the month. Identify which day of the week the 1st falls on, then count the Saturdays and Sundays in the month and subtract them. Then subtract each federal holiday that falls on one of the remaining weekdays, using the day most federal employees have it. The result is the business day count.

Planning Around Month Boundaries
Business day counts matter most when you are working with payment terms, project timelines, or regulatory deadlines that are expressed in business days. In 2026 a month can hold as few as 19 business days or as many as 22, a gap that shows up in billing cycles and operations. If you manage recurring invoices, payroll, or monthly close processes, knowing the business day count for each month in advance helps you avoid last-minute scheduling surprises.
