Hawaii's state holidays in 2027

The holiday schedules of Hawaii's Department of Human Resources Development (DHRD) list each state holiday beside its "Official Date Designated in Statute/Constitution". The holidays they list that are not federal holidays are Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day (the twenty-sixth day in March), Good Friday (the Friday preceding Easter Sunday), King Kamehameha I Day (the eleventh day in June), Statehood Day (the third Friday in August) and, in even-numbered years, General Election Day. The schedules list neither Juneteenth nor Columbus Day.

The Department of Human Resources Development publishes the dates state agencies observe, and its schedules show a Saturday holiday on the Friday before and a Sunday one on the Monday after. In 2027 they show Independence Day on Monday, July 5 instead of Sunday, July 4, Christmas Day on Friday, December 24 instead of Saturday, December 25, and New Year's Day on Friday, December 31 instead of Saturday, January 1, 2028.

Good Friday and Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day fall on the same day in 2027, Friday, March 26, so the two holidays share one day. Neither is a federal holiday, so this page's count treats that day as a working day.

2027 is an odd-numbered year, and the DHRD schedules list General Election Day in even-numbered years only; the next is Tuesday, November 7, 2028.

Why 2027 gives Hawaii fewer working days

A year's working days are its weekdays minus the holidays that land on them, and both halves move. The weekday supply depends only on the year's length and the weekday it starts on; the holiday half depends on where each fixed date falls that year. 2027 runs 365 days, 52 whole weeks and one day over. This page's count leaves out the Friday or Monday that federal employees have as the holiday, because the count follows the federal employees' holidays. A count on the Federal Reserve Banks' schedule has one more business day across each of those Fridays.

Where Hawaii's own calendar departs from the count in 2027

The count on this page and Hawaii's state-agency calendar (the DHRD holiday schedules) differ only where one of them has a holiday on a weekday and the other does not. The Hawaii calendar has Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day and Good Friday on Friday, March 26, King Kamehameha I Day on Friday, June 11, and Statehood Day on Friday, August 20 as holidays, which the federal count treats as working days. The federal count takes out Juneteenth (observed) on Friday, June 18 and Columbus Day on Monday, October 11, which the Hawaii calendar does not.

Hawaii's longest stretch without a holiday, 2027

The longest run of working days with no weekday holiday inside it depends on how far apart consecutive closures sit, so it moves whenever one fixed-date holiday changes weekday. In 2027 it runs from Tuesday, February 16 to Friday, May 28 inside the first half of the year: 74 working days, 14 full working weeks and four days.

The first working day of 2027 on this count is Monday, January 4, after New Year's Day. The last is Thursday, December 30, which is the latest date a count of working days can end on inside 2027.

Which calendar the 2027 count uses

The working-day total counts the legal public holidays of 5 U.S.C. 6103 on the dates most federal employees have them, as OPM publishes them. It is not identical to the Federal Reserve Banks' calendar. The Board of Governors' K.8 schedule states that the Federal Reserve Banks are open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday, and in 2027 that means Friday, June 18, Friday, December 24, and Friday, December 31. A count on the Reserve Banks' schedule has one more business day across each of those Fridays than this page's count shows.
