Maine's legal holidays sit in 4 M.R.S. section 1051, a provision of the Judiciary title that tells the courts when they may not sit. The list is the federal one plus Patriot's Day on the third Monday of April, with the second Monday of October named Indigenous Peoples Day. Section 1051 moves a Sunday holiday to the Monday and says nothing about a Saturday one, so the Friday before, which 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) makes the holiday for federal employees on a Monday-to-Friday week, is not a legal holiday under it. State employees' paid holidays are a separate list, the Bureau of Human Resources holiday schedule for employees not covered by collective bargaining, which adds Thanksgiving Friday and grants a compensatory day when a holiday falls on a normal day off. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) makes the Friday before it the legal public holiday for employees whose basic workweek is Monday through Friday (the Office of Personnel Management says the same of most federal employees, for pay and leave purposes), so this page's count leaves that Friday out. The Federal Reserve Banks are open that Friday. Maine's legal holidays in 2027
Maine's list sits in the Judiciary title of its statutes, 4 M.R.S. section 1051, and it is written as a rule for the courts: court may not be held on the listed days, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court may order court held on one in a particular case when the interests of justice and judicial economy are served, and public offices in county buildings may close on them. The list follows the federal one with one addition, Patriot's Day on the third Monday in April, and it names the second Monday in October Indigenous Peoples Day. Like 5 U.S.C. 6103, it calls the third Monday in February Washington's Birthday.
In 2027 Patriot's Day is Monday, April 19 and Indigenous Peoples Day is Monday, October 11, the date the federal list calls Columbus Day. Thanksgiving is defined unlike any other entry: court may not be held on "any day designated for the annual Thanksgiving", which in 2027 is Thursday, November 25, the fourth Thursday of November that the federal list fixes.
Memorial Day is the last Monday in May, "but if the Federal Government designates May 30th as the date for observance of Memorial Day, the 30th of May". Federal law designates the last Monday, so Maine's Memorial Day is Monday, May 31; May 30 is a Sunday in 2027.
Section 1051 moves a holiday that falls on a Sunday to the following Monday, "with all the privileges" of the day itself, and says nothing about Saturday. In 2027 Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4 and moves to Monday, July 5; Juneteenth falls on Saturday, June 19 and section 1051 leaves it there; Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25 and section 1051 leaves it there. State employees' paid holidays are a separate list, the Bureau of Human Resources holiday schedule, which grants a compensatory day when a holiday falls on a normal day off.
Why 2027 gives Maine fewer working days
A year's working days are its weekdays minus the holidays that land on them, and both halves move.
