Queensland's public holiday rules, applied to 2027

Queensland adds the day after Good Friday (Easter Saturday), Easter Sunday and Labour Day on the first Monday in May, and its Holidays Act 1983 puts the Birthday of the Sovereign, the King's Birthday, on the first Monday in October, where this site's national set has the second Monday of June. In 2027 those days are Easter Saturday on Saturday, March 27, Easter Sunday on Sunday, March 28, Labour Day on Monday, May 3, and King's Birthday on Monday, October 4.

25 April is a Sunday in 2027, and the Holidays Act 1983 substitutes the Monday for a Sunday Anzac Day ("if 25 April is a Sunday"), so Monday, April 26 is the public holiday and the Sunday is not.

The Holidays Act 1983 adds a weekday for a weekend year-end holiday rather than replacing the weekend date. The rule is stated in the schedule's separate 27 December, 28 December, 2 January and 3 January entries. Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and stays a public holiday, with Monday, December 27 added; Boxing Day falls on a Sunday and stays a public holiday, with Tuesday, December 28 added.

The Holidays Act 1983 puts the King's Birthday on Monday, October 4; this site's national set has Monday, June 14, which is why the June date is listed as a national date not in Queensland's table.

Queensland appoints show holidays district by district under section 4 of the Holidays Act 1983, and the one in the Queensland Government's public holidays table is the Royal Queensland Show (Brisbane area only): Wednesday, August 11 in 2027. A count confined to Brisbane loses that Wednesday as well; this statewide page keeps it as a working day.

Why 2027 gives Queensland fewer working days

A year's working days are its weekdays minus the holidays that land on them, and both halves move. The weekday supply depends only on the year's length and the weekday it starts on; the holiday half depends on where each fixed date falls that year. 2027 runs 365 days, 52 whole weeks and one day over. It opens and closes on a Friday, so the spare day is a weekday and the year holds 261 of them.

Nine public holidays in this page's count fall on weekdays (four more land on a weekend and cost nothing), so Queensland has 252 working days in 2027. That is one fewer than 2026 (253). The weekday supply is identical, so the whole change comes from holidays: one more of them lands on a weekday. 2028 falls to 251.

Weekend public holidays in 2027, and what Queensland does with each

A public holiday on a Saturday or Sunday removes no working day; what changes the count is whether Queensland's law adds a weekday for it or puts one in its place. In Queensland in 2027:

• Anzac Day falls on Sunday, April 25, which is not a public holiday here that year: Monday, April 26 replaces it.
• Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25 and stays a public holiday; Monday, December 27 is added on top, so the weekend date takes no working day and the weekday does.
• Boxing Day falls on Sunday, December 26 and stays a public holiday; Tuesday, December 28 is added on top, so the weekend date takes no working day and the weekday does.

Only the weekday entries change the count; a public holiday on a Saturday or Sunday takes no working day from it.

What Queensland's own days cost in 2027

A public holiday on Queensland's list takes a working day out of the count only when it lands on a weekday that is not also a public holiday on the national Australian set, and a public holiday on the national Australian set that is not on Queensland's list puts one back only when it lands on a weekday. In 2027, Queensland's additions on a weekday are Anzac Day (observed) on Monday, April 26, Labour Day on Monday, May 3, and King's Birthday on Monday, October 4, while Easter Saturday on Saturday, March 27 and Easter Sunday on Sunday, March 28 fall on a weekend and change nothing. King's Birthday on Monday, June 14 is on the national Australian set and not on Queensland's list, so the count treats it as a working day.

The net effect is two fewer working days than the national Australian set: 252 against 254.

Where the fixed-date holidays land in 2027

A holiday tied to a calendar date moves one weekday later each year, so the week it breaks changes every year while its date stays put. Against 2026, each of these has moved one weekday on:

• New Year's Day is a Friday in 2027, after a Thursday in 2026, so on this page's count the weekend after it becomes three days off.
• Australia Day is a Tuesday in 2027, after a Monday in 2026, which strands Monday, January 25 between the weekend and the holiday on this page's count.
• ANZAC Day is a Sunday in 2027, after a Saturday in 2026, a weekend day, so the date itself takes no working day on this page's count; the weekend rules above decide whether a weekday is given for it.
• Christmas Day is a Saturday in 2027, after a Friday in 2026, a weekend day, so the date itself takes no working day on this page's count; the weekend rules above decide whether a weekday is given for it.
• Boxing Day is a Sunday in 2027, after a Saturday in 2026, a weekend day, so the date itself takes no working day on this page's count; the weekend rules above decide whether a weekday is given for it.

Long weekends and four-day breaks in Queensland, 2027

A weekday holiday next to a weekend turns two days off into three; two closures side by side, or one on each side of a weekend, make four or more. That is arithmetic on the dates, so the list moves every year even when the holidays do not. On this page's count, Queensland has six such breaks in 2027:

• Friday, January 1 to Sunday, January 3: three days, for New Year's Day.
• Friday, March 26 to Monday, March 29: four days, for Good Friday and Easter Monday.
• Saturday, April 24 to Monday, April 26: three days, for Anzac Day (observed).
• Saturday, May 1 to Monday, May 3: three days, for Labour Day.
• Saturday, October 2 to Monday, October 4: three days, for King's Birthday.
• Saturday, December 25 to Tuesday, December 28: four days, for Christmas Day (additional) and Boxing Day (additional).

Stranded working days in 2027

A holiday on a Tuesday or a Thursday leaves one working day stranded between it and the weekend. In 2027 Queensland has one: Monday, January 25, next to Australia Day. It is a full working day on this page's count even though a day off sits on either side, so a deadline that lands on it is not pushed anywhere.

Queensland month by month, 2027

A month's working days are its weekdays less the holidays on them, so a month with no weekday holiday is set entirely by how its weekdays fall, and every holiday that lands midweek takes one day off the month it sits in.

The third column counts the same months on the national Australian set, so the gap between the two columns is exactly what Queensland's own calendar changes.

The longest unbroken stretch of 2027

The longest run of working days with no weekday holiday inside it depends on how far apart consecutive closures sit, so it moves whenever one fixed-date holiday changes weekday. In 2027 it runs from Tuesday, May 4 to Friday, October 1, straddling the middle of the year: 109 working days, 21 full working weeks and four days.

The first working day of 2027 on this count is Monday, January 4, after New Year's Day. The last is Friday, December 31, which is the latest date a count of working days can end on inside 2027.

Which calendar the 2027 count uses

The count uses the public holidays Queensland's own Act declares for the whole state, including any weekday the Act adds or substitutes for a weekend holiday. Show holidays are appointed district by district under section 4 of the Holidays Act 1983, so the Royal Queensland Show holiday, for the Brisbane area only, is not counted. Nor is the part-day public holiday on 24 December from 6 pm to midnight, which section 2(4) applies only for working out a person's entitlements under the laws it names.
