Bank holidays this calendar counts as business days

This calendar treats as closed Ireland's ten public holidays, Good Friday, and a weekday on which banks and Government offices both close in place of a public holiday that falls on a weekend. The Banking & Payments Federation Ireland's bank-holiday list closes the banks on more weekdays than that, so a count of bank business days that runs across a date the list closes and this calendar counts as a business day has one day fewer for each such date than this calendar shows.

Bank holidays in December 2026 that this calendar counts as business days:

  • Tuesday, December 29: Christmas bank holiday

No date listed here is a public holiday under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997. Civil-service Circular 5/1984 does not close Government offices on such a date: after a Saturday public holiday it only lets a department give its staff a day off, and its list of public holidays has no third day at Christmas.

Sources: Banking & Payments Federation Ireland, Bank Holidays - Republic of Ireland 2025-2027 (in the register); circulars.gov.ie (Government of Ireland), Circular 5/1984, Public and Privilege Holidays (in the register). Checked October 12, 2026.

Ireland December deadlines

Employers pay November's PAYE liability within 14 days after the end of the month, or 23 days on ROS, and a company with a 31 March year end files its CT1 by December 23. Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day are public holidays and T2 closing days. When one falls at a weekend the Act moves neither: this calculator counts the weekday after a Sunday holiday, when Government offices close under Circular 5/1984, while the banks close the extra days the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland lists. Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday and St Stephen's Day a Saturday. The Department of Justice list closes Monday 28 December in lieu, and this calculator counts it; the banks also close Tuesday 29 December, which the calculator does not count.

Those dates in 2026

Every date named above falls on a working day in 2026 under the Irish calendar. That is worth checking rather than assuming: the same calendar date moves through the week from year to year, so a date that settles cleanly this year may not next year.

Ireland reporting cycles and business-day rules

Revenue sets Irish VAT on two-month taxable periods starting in January, March, May, July, September and November: the return and payment are due by the 19th day of the month after each period, extended to the 23rd for ROS filers. An employer's monthly PAYE liability, shown on a Revenue statement built from the month's payroll submissions, is due 14 days after the end of the month, or 23 days for employers who file and pay on ROS. A company files its CT1 return and pays any balance nine months after the end of its accounting period, on or before the 23rd of the ninth month (the 21st if it does not file and pay electronically). T2, the Eurosystem's real-time gross settlement system, which replaced TARGET2 in March 2023, is open Monday to Friday and, for euro settlement, also closed on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 December and 26 December. It does not close for St Patrick's Day (17 March) or for the Irish public holidays in February, June, August and October, and it does close on 1 May, which is an Irish public holiday only when it is the first Monday in May. Under the European Communities (Late Payment in Commercial Transactions) Regulations 2012, as amended in 2013, 2014 and 2016, statutory late payment interest is the ECB main refinancing rate plus 8 percentage points; between undertakings a contract may vary that interest, provided the result is not grossly unfair to the creditor. A payment date or period that a contract between undertakings sets beyond 60 calendar days must be expressly agreed and not grossly unfair to the supplier. Where the contract specifies no date or period for payment, the payment date falls 30 calendar days after the purchaser receives the invoice, after delivery where the invoice arrives first or its date of receipt is uncertain, or after an acceptance or verification procedure where one applies and the invoice arrives no later than it. Interest runs from the day after the payment date.

December 2026 working days compared by country

Working-day counts vary across countries because each country observes its own public holidays. The table below shows December 2026 under 11 of the site's 25 holiday calendars; the summary above gives Ireland's own count.

How December 2026 compares year over year

December 2025 also had 21 working days, so the working capacity is unchanged year over year. On the surrounding months, November 2026 has 21 working days and January 2027 has 20. Looking forward, December 2027 has 22 working days under the same Irish holiday calendar.

Using this calculator in Ireland

Count the 21 business days of December 2026 against Revenue's dates when one is near: VAT for each two-month period is due by the 19th day of the following month, or the 23rd for ROS filers; an employer's PAYE for a month within 14 days after its end, or 23 days on ROS; and a company's CT1 return and balance on or before the 23rd of the ninth month after its accounting period ends (the 21st if it does not file and pay electronically). A euro payment that settles through T2 cannot settle on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 December or 26 December, although T2 does not close for St Patrick's Day or for the Irish public holidays in February, June, August and October. Where a contract specifies no date or period for payment, the Late Payment Regulations 2012, as amended, put the payment date 30 calendar days after the purchaser receives the invoice, after delivery where the invoice arrives first or its date of receipt is uncertain, or after an acceptance or verification procedure where one applies and the invoice arrives no later than it.

How December 2026 is shaped

The headline count answers how many working days December 2026 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the Irish holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.

The month that closes the quarter, the half and the year

December runs 31 days and closes Q4, the second half of the year and the calendar year itself, so its final working day carries more boundaries than any other date on the calendar. It shares its weekday alignment with September, which means the two months start the same way and end differently. Nothing in the year follows December, so a slip here has no later period to absorb it.

In December 2026 that comes to 21 working days across 31 calendar days, against 21 in November 2026 and 20 in January 2027.

A start one day into the week

The 1st falls on the second working day of the week, so December inherits a part-week at the top. One working day of that week was spent in the previous month, which is why a month opening here reads short at the beginning and long at the end. Reporting cut on calendar weeks and reporting cut on the calendar month disagree about where the period starts, and the gap is exactly one working day.

The opening stretch runs from Tuesday, December 1 to December 4, four working days before the first break. December 2026 carries 21 working days in total, so that opening block is 19% of the month's working capacity.

Five working stretches

December splits into five working stretches. That is the ordinary shape of a month whose only interruptions are its weekends, and it means the month's internal boundaries are all predictable a year in advance: nothing here depends on a holiday date moving.

The working days of December 2026 arrive in stretches of 4, 5, 5, 4, and 3 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from December 7 to December 11. A task needing more consecutive working days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.

The month is front-loaded. It opens with four consecutive days and closes with three, so capacity thins toward the end. Work deferred out of the first stretch arrives in a shorter one, which is how a schedule that looked comfortable in week one stops fitting.

Three weekdays occur five times

A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In December 2026 the three are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.

All of them are working days here, so the surplus lands entirely on the working week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each occur 5 times. A weekend of two days can take at most two of them, and had it done so the same month would carry 19 working days rather than 21.

Two closures in the month

Two Irish holidays fall on working days in December 2026: Christmas Day on Friday, December 25 and St Stephen's Day (additional) on Monday, December 28. Two closures remove two days from the total, but their effect on the month's usable structure depends on how far apart they are.

The two sit three calendar days apart, close enough that the working days between them are hemmed in on both sides. A pair this tight behaves more like one long interruption than two separate ones.

18 working days pass before the closure and only 3 follow it. With the break past the midpoint, most of the month's capacity has already been spent when it arrives, so anything the closure displaces competes for a shrinking remainder.

The closures around this month

December 2026 carries two Irish closures of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.

Looking outside the month, the last was October Bank Holiday on October 26, 2026, 36 calendar days before December began and the next is New Year's Day on January 1, 2027, 1 calendar day after it ends.

Across the whole of 2026 the Irish calendar puts 11 closures on working days, of which two fall in December. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.

One working day short of the week

December 2026 closes on the fourth working day of its final week, one day short of a full week. The remaining working day of that week belongs to the next month, so the last calendar week of December is split across two reporting periods. Weekly and monthly figures for that week will not agree, and the difference is one working day.

The last working day of December 2026 is Thursday, December 31. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Tuesday, December 29, two calendar days before the month closes.

The quarter closes here

December closes Q4, so the quarter's last working day and this month's last working day are the same date. Everything the quarter has deferred arrives inside these 21 working days, and there is no further month in the period to move it into.

Across the whole quarter there are 63 working days, of which 21 fall in December. The other two months carry October 2026 with 21 and November 2026 with 21. All three months of the quarter carry the same working-day count, which happens when their weekday alignments and closures cancel out exactly.

The week's first working day is the scarcest

The first working day of the week is the one December gives least often. Anything anchored to the start of the working week (a weekly kickoff, a Monday-morning cutoff, a start-of-week batch) fires fewer times this month than the calendar count suggests, because a closure has taken one of them out.

Counted as worked rather than as occurring, December 2026 gives Monday 3, Tuesday 5, Wednesday 5, Thursday 5, and Friday 3. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.

Where the month sits in the year

December sits in the middle of 2026 by working-day count under the Irish calendar. The middle of that ranking is where a month's total is least informative on its own, because a mid-ranked month can be a long month carrying closures or a short one carrying none, and the two need different plans.

2026 carries 250 working days in total under the Irish calendar. The longest month of the year is July 2026 with 23 and the shortest is February 2026 with 19, a spread of 4. December ranks 8th of the twelve with 21.

Inside one of the year's denser months

December 2026 carries more than one Irish closure, which puts it among the year's denser months. Closures are never spread evenly across a year, so a month's own count says as much about the country's calendar as about the month.

Across 2026 the Irish closures fall 3 in Q1, 4 in Q2, 1 in Q3, and 3 in Q4. Every holiday in the Irish data for 2026 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.

The longest uninterrupted run in the 2026 calendar sits between August 3, 2026 and October 26, 2026, 84 calendar days with no Irish closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.

Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern

Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the Irish calendar is no exception.

2026 opens its Irish closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2026 and ends them with St Stephen's Day (additional) on December 28, 2026. The densest month of the year is April 2026 with two closures on working days.

The same count as last year

December 2026 and December 2025 carry the same number of working days, 21 in each. An unchanged total does not mean an unchanged month: the working days sit on different dates and break into different stretches, so a schedule copied forward date by date will not line up even though the capacity has not moved.

December opens 2025 on a Monday, 2026 on a Tuesday, and 2027 on a Wednesday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, December 2027 carries 22 working days.

Anchor dates that do not fall on working days

Three of the common monthly anchor dates in December 2026 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.

The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.

Net terms dated in December 2026

An invoice dated the 1st of December on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on December 31, 2026, a working day under the Irish calendar. Terms counted in calendar days move independently of the working week, so the same term written on two consecutive months can settle cleanly in one and roll across a closure in the other.

Invoice dateNet 30, calendar daysNet 60, calendar days

Dated December 31January 30, 2027 (rolls to February 2, 2027)March 1, 2027

Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the Ireland calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many business days are in December 2026 under the Irish holiday calendar?
December 2026 has 21 working days under the Irish holiday calendar. The month spans 31 calendar days, of which 8 fall on a weekend and 2 are Irish holidays that land on a weekday. The remaining 21 weekdays are countable as working days for invoicing, deadline tracking, and contract math.
Which Ireland holidays affect December 2026?
December 2026 contains 2 Irish holidays: Christmas Day on Friday, December 25; St Stephen's Day (additional) on Monday, December 28. The calculator skips each of them. Regional or industry-specific closures may add further non-working days for narrower contract definitions; layer them into the calculator's Advanced options if needed.
Why is St Brigid's Day included from 2023 onward?
S.I. No. 50 of 2022, made under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, prescribed St Brigid's Day as Ireland's tenth public holiday from 2023: the first Monday in February each year, or 1 February itself when that falls on a Friday. The explanatory note to the regulations ties the day to Imbolc and St Brigid, and names Monday 6 February 2023 as the first.
What happens when an Irish public holiday falls on a weekend?
It stays a public holiday on its own date: the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 moves none of them. The employee's benefit becomes a paid day off within a month, an extra day of annual leave or an extra day's pay, and the Workplace Relations Commission states that there is no legal entitlement to have the next working day off. The Banking & Payments Federation Ireland's bank-holiday lists still close the banks on the next free weekday after each weekend public holiday they cover. Government offices close it after a Sunday holiday (civil-service Circular 5/1984); after a Saturday one the circular only lets a department grant its staff a day off. This calculator counts that weekday as closed, marked (additional), where banks and Government offices both close it, which after a Saturday holiday means a department's own closure list shows it closed, and as a business day otherwise. Easter Monday, St Brigid's Day and the Monday holidays in May, June, August and October always fall on a weekday.
Why does the business-day count vary year to year?
Two things shift the monthly count for Ireland. First, the day of the week the first of the month lands on changes the count of each weekday. Second, Irish holidays anchored to a fixed date shift their weekday across years. Some years a fixed-date holiday lands on a weekend; some countries shift the observance to an adjacent weekday and some absorb it into the weekend. December 2025 also had 21 working days, so the working capacity is unchanged year over year.
When is the last working day of December 2026?
The last working day of December 2026 under the Irish calendar is Thursday, December 31. The month's last calendar day is Thursday, December 31, so the two are the same date this year. Counting back, the third-to-last working day is Tuesday, December 29.
How many working days in a row does December 2026 offer?
December 2026 has 21 working days in total, but they do not run consecutively. They arrive in five stretches of 4, 5, 5, 4, and 3 days, so the longest unbroken run is five days, from December 7 to December 11. No working day in the month is isolated between two closures.
