Ireland January deadlines
Revenue's VAT return and payment for the November-December taxable period are due by January 19, or by January 23 for a business that files and pays on ROS. Employers pay December's PAYE liability within 14 days after the end of the month, or 23 days if they file and pay on ROS, and a company with a 30 April year end files its CT1 return and pays any balance on or before January 23, the 23rd of the ninth month. New Year's Day is a public holiday and one of T2's closing days for euro settlement. New Year's Day 2027 is a Friday.

- When VAT becomes payable: file and pay VAT by the 19th day of the month following the end of each taxable period, extended to the 23rd day of the month for ROS filers; the taxable period is a two-month period commencing on the first day of January, March, May, July, September and November (Revenue (Office of the Revenue Commissioners))
- Paying tax to Revenue: the monthly statement shows the employer's total tax liability for the reference month based on payroll submissions during that month; the employer must pay within 14 days after the end of each month, or 23 days after the end of the month if it files and pays on ROS (Revenue (Office of the Revenue Commissioners))
- Corporation Tax payment and filing: a company must file its return, and pay any tax due, nine months after the end of the accounting period, on or before the 23rd of the ninth month (the 21st where it does not pay and file electronically) (Revenue (Office of the Revenue Commissioners))
- Public Holidays: the ten public holidays and their 2026 dates; the benefit for a public holiday is a paid day off on that day, a paid day off within a month, an additional day of annual leave or an additional day's pay; where the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, in the Commission's words, there is no legal entitlement to have the next working day off work; Good Friday is not a public holiday (Workplace Relations Commission)

Ireland reporting cycles and business-day rules
Revenue sets Irish VAT on two-month taxable periods starting in January, March, May, July, September and November: the return and payment are due by the 19th day of the month after each period, extended to the 23rd for ROS filers. An employer's monthly PAYE liability, shown on a Revenue statement built from the month's payroll submissions, is due 14 days after the end of the month, or 23 days for employers who file and pay on ROS. A company files its CT1 return and pays any balance nine months after the end of its accounting period, on or before the 23rd of the ninth month (the 21st if it does not file and pay electronically). T2, the Eurosystem's real-time gross settlement system, which replaced TARGET2 in March 2023, is open Monday to Friday and, for euro settlement, also closed on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 December and 26 December. It does not close for St Patrick's Day (17 March) or for the Irish public holidays in February, June, August and October, and it does close on 1 May, which is an Irish public holiday only when it is the first Monday in May. Under the European Communities (Late Payment in Commercial Transactions) Regulations 2012, as amended in 2013, 2014 and 2016, statutory late payment interest is the ECB main refinancing rate plus 8 percentage points; between undertakings a contract may vary that interest, provided the result is not grossly unfair to the creditor. A payment date or period that a contract between undertakings sets beyond 60 calendar days must be expressly agreed and not grossly unfair to the supplier. Where the contract specifies no date or period for payment, the payment date falls 30 calendar days after the purchaser receives the invoice, after delivery where the invoice arrives first or its date of receipt is uncertain, or after an acceptance or verification procedure where one applies and the invoice arrives no later than it. Interest runs from the day after the payment date.

January 2027 working days compared by country
Working-day counts vary across countries because each country observes its own public holidays. The table below shows January 2027 under 11 of the site's 25 holiday calendars; the summary above gives Ireland's own count.

How January 2027 compares year over year
January 2026 had 21 working days, so January 2027 has 1 fewer working day year over year. On the surrounding months, December 2026 has 21 working days and February 2027 has 19. Looking forward, January 2028 has 21 working days under the same Irish holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in Ireland
Count the 20 business days of January 2027 against Revenue's dates when one is near: VAT for each two-month period is due by the 19th day of the following month, or the 23rd for ROS filers; an employer's PAYE for a month within 14 days after its end, or 23 days on ROS; and a company's CT1 return and balance on or before the 23rd of the ninth month after its accounting period ends (the 21st if it does not file and pay electronically). A euro payment that settles through T2 cannot settle on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 December or 26 December, although T2 does not close for St Patrick's Day or for the Irish public holidays in February, June, August and October. Where a contract specifies no date or period for payment, the Late Payment Regulations 2012, as amended, put the payment date 30 calendar days after the purchaser receives the invoice, after delivery where the invoice arrives first or its date of receipt is uncertain, or after an acceptance or verification procedure where one applies and the invoice arrives no later than it.

How January 2027 is shaped
The headline count answers how many working days January 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the Irish holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
The month that opens the year and the quarter together
January is one of only four months that begins a quarter, and the only one that begins a calendar year at the same time. Its 31 days are the joint longest, and its first day is the single date on which the largest number of annual cycles reset at once. That concentration is the reason a January working-day count is worth checking rather than assuming: every cycle that starts here inherits whatever the month's alignment gives it.
In January 2027 that comes to 20 working days across 31 calendar days, against 21 in December 2026 and 19 in February 2027.
The month opens on a closure
January 2027 begins on a public holiday. New Year's Day falls on the 1st, which is a Friday this year, so the calendar month and the working month start on different dates. Any obligation written as "the first of the month" and any obligation written as "the first working day" point at different days in January 2027, and a schedule that treats them as interchangeable is wrong by at least one day here.
The month's first working day is Monday, January 4, and January 2027 carries 20 working days in total.
How the working days break up
The working days of January 2027 fall into four separate stretches. The count of stretches matters more than it looks: a month's total is the sum of its runs, but a deliverable that needs consecutive days is limited by the longest single run, and the two numbers move independently.
The working days of January 2027 arrive in stretches of 5, 5, 5, and 5 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from January 4 to January 8. A task needing more consecutive working days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is balanced end to end. Its opening and closing stretches are the same length, five days each, so work pushed from the start of January to its end finds the same amount of room it left behind. That symmetry is the exception rather than the rule.
Three weekdays occur five times
A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In January 2027 the three are Sunday, Friday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.
Only Friday among them is a working day, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.
One closure, and where it lands
January 2027 carries a single Irish closure on a working day: New Year's Day on Friday, January 1. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.
It sits directly beside a weekend rather than inside a working week, so it extends an existing break instead of creating a new one. That is the cheapest position a holiday can occupy: the month loses a day but keeps its shape.
The closure arrives before any working day has passed, so January is interrupted before it has started and the whole of its 20 remaining working days sit after the break.
The closures around this month
January 2027 carries one Irish closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was St Stephen's Day (additional) on December 28, 2026, 4 calendar days before January began and the next is St Brigid's Day on February 1, 2027, 1 calendar day after it ends.
Across the whole of 2027 the Irish calendar puts ten closures on working days, of which one falls in January. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
The month ends over a weekend
January 2027 ends on a Sunday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.
The last working day of January 2027 is Friday, January 29. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, January 27, four calendar days before the month closes.
The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. Two calendar days of January follow it with nothing settling on them.
The quarter opens here
January is the first month of Q1. An opening month sets the baseline the rest of the quarter is measured against, and it is the one month where a slip has two further months to be absorbed in. Quarterly targets divided evenly by three ignore the fact that the three months rarely carry equal working-day counts.
Across the whole quarter there are 59 working days, of which 20 fall in January. The other two months carry February 2027 with 19 and March 2027 with 20. It is the largest of the three, so work deferred out of January lands in a month with less room than this one had.
Every working weekday occurs the same number of times
January 2027 works each weekday of its week the same number of times. That is the flat case, and it is the only one where a weekly recurring commitment costs the same whichever weekday it is pinned to. It happens when the month's length and its closures happen to cancel, not because the month is regular: the calendar census above and this one can agree for quite different reasons.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, January 2027 gives Monday 4, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 4, and Friday 4. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
Where the month sits in the year
January sits in the middle of 2027 by working-day count under the Irish calendar. The middle of that ranking is where a month's total is least informative on its own, because a mid-ranked month can be a long month carrying closures or a short one carrying none, and the two need different plans.
2027 carries 251 working days in total under the Irish calendar. The longest month of the year is April 2027 with 22 and the shortest is February 2027 with 19, a spread of 3. January ranks 8th of the twelve with 20.
Ireland closures across the year
A month's working-day count only means something against the country's whole calendar. Two countries that share a weekend and happen to have the same closure-free month can still run very different years, and Ireland is placed as follows.
Across 2027 the Irish closures fall 5 in Q1, 2 in Q2, 1 in Q3, and 2 in Q4. Every holiday in the Irish data for 2027 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between August 2, 2027 and October 25, 2027, 84 calendar days with no Irish closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the Irish calendar is no exception.
2027 opens its Irish closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2027 and ends them with St Stephen's Day (additional) on December 27, 2027. The densest month of the year is March 2027 with three closures on working days.
One working day fewer than last year
January 2027 has one working day fewer than January 2026: 20 against 21. On a monthly target that is roughly 5% less working time for the same calendar period, which is the size of gap that shows up as an unexplained miss rather than as a known constraint.
January opens 2026 on a Thursday, 2027 on a Friday, and 2028 on a Saturday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, January 2028 carries 21 working days.
Anchor dates that do not fall on working days
Three of the common monthly anchor dates in January 2027 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the Irish calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Friday | Closed: New Year's Day | January 4, 2027 |
| January 5 | Tuesday | Working day | January 5 |
| January 10 | Sunday | Weekend | January 11, 2027 |
| January 15 | Friday | Working day | January 15 |
| January 20 | Wednesday | Working day | January 20 |
| January 25 | Monday | Working day | January 25 |
| January 31 | Sunday | Weekend | February 2, 2027 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in January 2027
An invoice dated the 1st of January on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on January 31, 2027, which is not a working day under the Irish calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated January 1 | January 31, 2027 (rolls to February 2, 2027) | March 2, 2027 |
| Dated January 15 | February 14, 2027 (rolls to February 15, 2027) | March 16, 2027 |
| Dated January 31 | March 2, 2027 | April 1, 2027 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the Ireland calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
