Spain December deadlines

Three national holidays fall in December: Día de la Constitución on the 6th, Inmaculada Concepción on the 8th and Navidad on the 25th, the last of these among the four Article 37.2 protects by name. The exchanges run half sessions on December 24 and December 31, closing at 14:00 under the BME trading calendar, and close entirely on December 25. Withholding for November is due in the first twenty calendar days of the month.

Those dates in 2026

One of the dates named above does not fall on a working day in 2026 under the Spain-wide calendar. A fixed calendar date advances through the week year by year, so this resolution holds for 2026 only.

Spain reporting cycles and business-day rules

Each provision cited here sets a filing window, not a single date. Article 71.4 of the Reglamento del IVA puts the quarterly VAT return (Modelo 303) in the first twenty días naturales (calendar days) of the month after the quarter, the return for the last period of the year in the first thirty of January, and a monthly return in the first thirty of the following month, or by the last day of February for January. Article 111.1 of the Reglamento del IRPF puts the pagos fraccionados (Modelos 130 and 131) between the 1st and the 20th of April, July and October, and the fourth quarter's between the 1st and the 30th of January. Under Article 108.1, withholdings (Modelo 111 among the returns) are declared in the first twenty días naturales of April, July, October and January, and in the first twenty of every month where numbers 1 and 2 of Article 71.3 of the Reglamento del IVA apply or where, for the income the article names, the withholder is a public administration whose last approved annual budget exceeds 6 million euros. Article 124.1 of Ley 27/2014 puts the Impuesto sobre Sociedades return (Modelo 200) in the 25 días naturales that follow the six months after the end of the tax period. The AEAT's 2026 taxpayer calendar says that a deadline which falls on a local or regional holiday ends on the next día hábil, except Modelo 369; the AEAT page on the Modelo 303 filing period adds that Saturday is inhábil and that a last filing day which is inhábil moves to the next día hábil.

How December 2026 compares year over year

December 2025 also had 21 días laborables, so the working capacity is unchanged year over year. On the surrounding months, November 2026 has 21 días laborables and January 2027 has 19. Looking forward, December 2027 has 21 días laborables under the same Spain-wide holiday calendar.

Using this calculator in Spain

The 21 business days of December 2026 are its Monday-to-Friday days less the days of the calculator's Spain set, the days that are a holiday in all seventeen comunidades autónomas, in Ceuta and in Melilla; a holiday missing from any of those territories is not in the set. The count measures the days the month offers for preparing a return, not where a filing window ends: Article 124.1 of Ley 27/2014, for one, sets the window for the Impuesto sobre Sociedades return (Modelo 200) in días naturales (calendar days), the 25 that follow the six months after the end of the tax period. A window's end can also move: the AEAT's 2026 taxpayer calendar says that a deadline which falls on a local or regional holiday ends on the next día hábil, except Modelo 369, whose filing period does not move.

How December 2026 is shaped

The headline count answers how many días laborables December 2026 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the Spain-wide holiday calendar and a working week that treats sábado and domingo as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.

The month that closes the quarter, the half and the year

December runs 31 days and closes Q4, the second half of the year and the calendar year itself, so its final working day carries more boundaries than any other date on the calendar. It shares its weekday alignment with September, which means the two months start the same way and end differently. Nothing in the year follows December, so a slip here has no later period to absorb it.

In December 2026 that comes to 21 días laborables across 31 calendar days, against 21 in November 2026 and 19 in January 2027.

A start one day into the week

The 1st falls on the second working day of the week, so December inherits a part-week at the top. One working day of that week was spent in the previous month, which is why a month opening here reads short at the beginning and long at the end. Reporting cut on calendar weeks and reporting cut on the calendar month disagree about where the period starts, and the gap is exactly one working day.

The opening stretch runs from Tuesday, December 1 to December 4, four días laborables before the first break. December 2026 carries 21 días laborables in total, so that opening block is 19% of the month's working capacity.

One working day stands alone

One working day in December 2026 is walled in on both sides. Monday, December 7 sits between Día de la Constitución and Inmaculada Concepción, with no adjacent working day on either side. That single day still counts toward the month's total, but it cannot carry work that needs a second consecutive day, and anything that slips on it slips across a full closure rather than overnight.

The working days of December 2026 arrive in stretches of 4, 1, 3, 5, 4, and 4 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from December 14 to December 18. A task needing more consecutive días laborables than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.

The month is balanced end to end. Its opening and closing stretches are the same length, four days each, so work pushed from the start of December to its end finds the same amount of room it left behind. That symmetry is the exception rather than the rule.

Three weekdays occur five times

A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In December 2026 the three are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.

All of them are working days here, so the surplus lands entirely on the working week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each occur 5 times. A weekend of two days can take at most two of them, and had it done so the same month would carry 19 días laborables rather than 21.

Two closures in the month

Two Spain-wide holidays fall on working days in December 2026: Inmaculada Concepción on Tuesday, December 8 and Navidad on Friday, December 25. Two closures remove two days from the total, but their effect on the month's usable structure depends on how far apart they are.

They sit 17 calendar days apart, one in each half of the month, so December is interrupted twice at roughly even spacing rather than once heavily. That spreads the loss but leaves no long uninterrupted stretch in either half.

five working days pass before the closure and 16 follow it, which puts the break just short of the month's midpoint. A closure near the middle divides the month into two usable halves rather than trimming one end of it.

The closures around this month

December 2026 carries two Spain-wide closures of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.

Looking outside the month, the last was Fiesta Nacional de España on October 12, 2026, 50 calendar days before December began and the next is Año Nuevo on January 1, 2027, 1 calendar day after it ends.

Across the whole of 2026 the Spain-wide calendar puts seven closures on working days, of which two fall in December. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.

One working day short of the week

December 2026 closes on the fourth working day of its final week, one day short of a full week. The remaining working day of that week belongs to the next month, so the last calendar week of December is split across two reporting periods. Weekly and monthly figures for that week will not agree, and the difference is one working day.

The last working day of December 2026 is Thursday, December 31. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Tuesday, December 29, two calendar days before the month closes.

The quarter closes here

December closes Q4, so the quarter's last working day and this month's last working day are the same date. Everything the quarter has deferred arrives inside these 21 días laborables, and there is no further month in the period to move it into.

Across the whole quarter there are 63 días laborables, of which 21 fall in December. The other two months carry October 2026 with 21 and November 2026 with 21. All three months of the quarter carry the same working-day count, which happens when their weekday alignments and closures cancel out exactly.

The week's last working day is the scarcest

The last working day of the week is the one December gives least often. That matters more than the equivalent shortfall mid-week, because end-of-week cutoffs tend to be the ones that cannot move: work deferred past them waits out the whole weekend rather than a single night.

Counted as worked rather than as occurring, December 2026 gives Monday 4, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5, Thursday 5, and Friday 3. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.

Toward the short end of the year

December sits among the shorter working months of 2026 under the Spain-wide calendar. A month reaches this end of the ranking either by being short or by absorbing closures, and the two produce the same headline number while behaving differently: a closure fragments the month, a shorter calendar does not.

2026 carries 254 días laborables in total under the Spain-wide calendar. The longest month of the year is July 2026 with 23 and the shortest is May 2026 with 20, a spread of 3. December ranks 9th of the twelve with 21.

Inside one of the year's denser months

December 2026 carries more than one Spain-wide closure, which puts it among the year's denser months. Closures are never spread evenly across a year, so a month's own count says as much about the country's calendar as about the month.

Across 2026 the Spain-wide closures fall 2 in Q1, 2 in Q2, 0 in Q3, and 3 in Q4. A further three holidays land on the sábado and domingo weekend and cost no working day at all, which is why a country's holiday count and its working-day loss are different numbers.

The longest uninterrupted run in the 2026 calendar sits between May 1, 2026 and October 12, 2026, 164 calendar days with no Spain-wide closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.

Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern

Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the Spain-wide calendar is no exception.

2026 opens its Spain-wide closures with Año Nuevo on January 1, 2026 and ends them with Navidad on December 25, 2026. The densest month of the year is January 2026 with two closures on working days.

The same count as last year

December 2026 and December 2025 carry the same number of días laborables, 21 in each. An unchanged total does not mean an unchanged month: the working days sit on different dates and break into different stretches, so a schedule copied forward date by date will not line up even though the capacity has not moved.

December opens 2025 on a Monday, 2026 on a Tuesday, and 2027 on a Wednesday. The alignment moves every year, by one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, and here it happens to leave the totals level while changing which dates the working days sit on. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, December 2027 carries 21 días laborables.

Anchor dates that do not fall on working days

Three of the common monthly anchor dates in December 2026 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.

The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.

Net terms dated in December 2026

An invoice dated the 1st of December on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on December 31, 2026, a working day under the Spain-wide calendar. Terms counted in calendar days move independently of the working week, so the same term written on two consecutive months can settle cleanly in one and roll across a closure in the other.

Invoice dateNet 30, calendar daysNet 60, calendar days

Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the Spain calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many business days are in December 2026 under the Spain-wide holiday calendar?
December 2026 has 21 días laborables under the Spain-wide holiday calendar. The month spans 31 calendar days, of which 8 fall on a weekend and 2 are Spain-wide holidays that land on a weekday. The remaining 21 weekdays are countable as días laborables for invoicing, deadline tracking, and contract math.
Which Spain holidays affect December 2026?
December 2026 contains 2 Spain-wide holidays: Inmaculada Concepción on Tuesday, December 8; Navidad on Friday, December 25. The calculator skips each of them. Regional or industry-specific closures may add further non-working days for narrower contract definitions; layer them into the calculator's Advanced options if needed.
Why does the Spanish calendar vary year-to-year?
Part of the calendar is each comunidad autónoma's choice. Article 37.2 of the Estatuto de los Trabajadores allows no more than fourteen fiestas laborales a year, two of them local, and lets a community add one more, recoverable, in a year when too few national holidays fall on a Sunday for it to set one of its traditional holidays. It names four national days to be respected in any case: the Natividad del Señor, Año Nuevo, 1 May and 12 October. Article 45.1 of Real Decreto 2001/1983 lists the national days, and nine of them, those four included, cannot be replaced (letters a to c). The letter d days, Jueves Santo, the Epifanía del Señor and San José or Santiago Apóstol, a community may replace with traditional holidays of its own, as it may the Monday rest that follows a national holiday on a Sunday (article 45.3). The communities send their lists to the ministry before 30 September (article 45.4), and the lists for 2024 to 2027 were published in the BOE as resolutions of the Dirección General de Trabajo, each counting twelve days under these rules. Article 46 adds up to two local holidays a year in each municipality. The calculator's set holds only the days that are a holiday in all seventeen comunidades autónomas, in Ceuta and in Melilla; add a regional or local date under Advanced options.
What happens when a Spanish national holiday falls on a Sunday?
The rest day moves to the Monday. Article 37.2 of the Estatuto de los Trabajadores says the rest for a holiday that coincides with a Sunday is moved "en todo caso", in every case, to the Monday immediately after, and article 45.2 of Real Decreto 2001/1983 repeats it for the national holidays. Each comunidad autónoma may replace that Monday with a traditional holiday of its own (article 45.3), so whether the Monday is a holiday depends on the territory: the list the BOE publishes for the year marks it territory by territory. Those Mondays are not in the calculator's set, which keeps the holiday on its own date; if your territory keeps the Monday, add it under Advanced options.
Why does the business-day count vary year to year?
Two things shift the monthly count for Spain. First, the day of the week the first of the month lands on changes the count of each weekday. Second, Spain-wide holidays anchored to a fixed date shift their weekday across years. Some years a fixed-date holiday lands on a weekend; some countries shift the observance to an adjacent weekday and some absorb it into the weekend. December 2025 also had 21 días laborables, so the working capacity is unchanged year over year.
When is the last working day of December 2026?
The last working day of December 2026 under the Spain-wide calendar is Thursday, December 31. The month's last calendar day is Thursday, December 31, so the two are the same date this year. Counting back, the third-to-last working day is Tuesday, December 29.
How many working days in a row does December 2026 offer?
December 2026 has 21 días laborables in total, but they do not run consecutively. They arrive in six stretches of 4, 1, 3, 5, 4, and 4 days, so the longest unbroken run is five days, from December 14 to December 18. One working day in the month stands alone with a closure on either side.
