United States September deadlines
September 15 is the extended filing date for partnerships and S corporations that took the automatic six-month extension on Form 7004. A calendar-year corporation makes its third estimated tax payment the same day. Labor Day is a federal holiday on the first Monday. The federal government's fiscal year ends September 30, so contractors and grant-funded organisations face year-end milestones in the final week.

Those dates in 2027
Every date named above falls on a working day in 2027 under the US federal calendar. That is worth checking rather than assuming: the same calendar date moves through the week from year to year, so a date that settles cleanly this year may not next year.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the US federal calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 15 | Wednesday | Working day | |
| September 30 | Thursday | Working day |
This table resolves weekdays and nothing else. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day is set by the instrument that creates it, and no shift rule is assumed here for any jurisdiction. The sources behind each calendar are listed in the source register.

United States reporting cycles and business-day rules
Periods under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure are not counted in business days. Rule 6(a)(1) excludes the day of the event that triggers the period and counts every day after it, including intermediate Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays; when the last day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the period runs to the end of the next day that is none of those. Before the 2009 amendment the rule left intermediate Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays out of periods shorter than 11 days, and that exclusion no longer applies. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, this calculator leaves out the Friday before it, which 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) makes the holiday for federal employees on a Monday-to-Friday workweek; the Federal Reserve Banks stay open that Friday. Estimated tax payments of a corporation are due on the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 12th months of its tax year, which for a calendar-year corporation is April 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15. IRS Publication 509 states the general rule that an act due on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday is timely on the next day that is none of those, and by legal holiday it means any legal holiday in the District of Columbia.

How September 2027 compares year over year
September 2026 also had 21 business days, so the working capacity is unchanged year over year. On the surrounding months, August 2027 has 22 business days and October 2027 has 20. Looking forward, September 2028 has 20 business days under the same US federal holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in United States
The 21 business days in September 2027 are the count to use for invoice due dates, contract deadlines and SLA windows stated in business days. Federal contracts under the FAR count in calendar days, because FAR 2.101 defines a day as a calendar day unless otherwise specified. For an invoice payment, FAR 32.904(b)(1) sets the due date at the later of the 30th day after the designated billing office receives a proper invoice and the 30th day after government acceptance of the supplies or services. Paragraphs (c) through (f) of the same section set other dates for architect-engineer, construction, cost-reimbursement service and food contracts.

How September 2027 is shaped
The headline count answers how many business days September 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the US federal holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
The month that closes the third quarter
September runs 30 days and closes Q3, so its last working day is also the quarter's. It shares its weekday alignment with December in every year, which means the September and December calendars are the same shape and differ only in length and in what closes them. That pairing is worth knowing when a plan is copied between the two quarters.
In September 2027 that comes to 21 business days across 30 calendar days, against 22 in August 2027 and 20 in October 2027.
A midweek start
September 2027 begins in the middle of a working week. Two of that week's working days belong to the month before and the rest to this one, so the first row of any weekly report covering September is a partial row. Midweek starts are the ones that most often produce an apparent dip in week-one output: the week is short, not the team.
The opening stretch runs from Wednesday, September 1 to September 3, three business days before the first break. September 2027 carries 21 business days in total, so that opening block is 14% of the month's working capacity.
Five working stretches
September splits into five working stretches. That is the ordinary shape of a month whose only interruptions are its weekends, and it means the month's internal boundaries are all predictable a year in advance: nothing here depends on a holiday date moving.
The working days of September 2027 arrive in stretches of 3, 4, 5, 5, and 4 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from September 13 to September 17. A task needing more consecutive business days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is back-loaded. It opens with three consecutive days and closes with four, so the room is at the end rather than the start. That is the safer of the two imbalances, because a slip has somewhere to go, but it also makes the opening week a poor sample of the month.
Two weekdays occur five times
Thirty days is four seven-day cycles plus two, so a 30-day month has exactly two weekdays occurring five times and five occurring four times. Here they are Wednesday and Thursday. The pair is always consecutive, because the surplus days are the first two of the month repeated at its end.
All of them are working days here, so the surplus lands entirely on the working week: Wednesday and Thursday each occur 5 times. Had the surplus fallen on the weekend instead, the same month would carry 19 business days rather than 21.
One closure, and where it lands
September 2027 carries a single US federal closure on a working day: Labor Day on Monday, September 6. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.
It sits directly beside a weekend rather than inside a working week, so it extends an existing break instead of creating a new one. That is the cheapest position a holiday can occupy: the month loses a day but keeps its shape.
three working days pass before the closure and 18 follow it, so the interruption sits near the front of the month. An early closure is the cheaper position of the two: there is more month left afterwards to absorb whatever it displaced.
The closures around this month
September 2027 carries one US federal closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was Independence Day (observed) on July 5, 2027, 58 calendar days before September began and the next is Columbus Day on October 11, 2027, 11 calendar days after it ends.
Across the whole of 2027 the US federal calendar puts 12 closures on working days, of which one falls in September. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
One working day short of the week
September 2027 closes on the fourth working day of its final week, one day short of a full week. The remaining working day of that week belongs to the next month, so the last calendar week of September is split across two reporting periods. Weekly and monthly figures for that week will not agree, and the difference is one working day.
The last working day of September 2027 is Thursday, September 30. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Tuesday, September 28, two calendar days before the month closes.
The quarter closes here
September closes Q3, so the quarter's last working day and this month's last working day are the same date. Everything the quarter has deferred arrives inside these 21 business days, and there is no further month in the period to move it into.
Across the whole quarter there are 64 business days, of which 21 fall in September. The other two months carry July 2027 with 21 and August 2027 with 22. It is the smallest of the three, so the quarter's capacity sits mostly in the other two months and a plan that spreads work evenly across the quarter will over-commit September.
The week's first working day is the scarcest
The first working day of the week is the one September gives least often. Anything anchored to the start of the working week (a weekly kickoff, a Monday-morning cutoff, a start-of-week batch) fires fewer times this month than the calendar count suggests, because a closure has taken one of them out.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, September 2027 gives Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5, Thursday 5, and Friday 4. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
Where the month sits in the year
September sits in the middle of 2027 by working-day count under the US federal calendar. The middle of that ranking is where a month's total is least informative on its own, because a mid-ranked month can be a long month carrying closures or a short one carrying none, and the two need different plans.
2027 carries 249 business days in total under the US federal calendar. The longest month of the year is March 2027 with 23 and the shortest is February 2027 with 19, a spread of 4. September ranks 6th of the twelve with 21.
United States closures across the year
A month's working-day count only means something against the country's whole calendar. Two countries that share a weekend and happen to have the same closure-free month can still run very different years, and United States is placed as follows.
Across 2027 the US federal closures fall 3 in Q1, 2 in Q2, 2 in Q3, and 5 in Q4. Every holiday in the US federal data for 2027 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between February 15, 2027 and May 31, 2027, 105 calendar days with no US federal closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the US federal calendar is no exception.
2027 opens its US federal closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2027 and ends them with New Year's Day 2028 (observed) on December 31, 2027. The densest month of the year is January 2027 with two closures on working days.
The same count as last year
September 2027 and September 2026 carry the same number of business days, 21 in each. An unchanged total does not mean an unchanged month: the working days sit on different dates and break into different stretches, so a schedule copied forward date by date will not line up even though the capacity has not moved.
September opens 2026 on a Tuesday, 2027 on a Wednesday, and 2028 on a Friday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, September 2028 carries 20 business days.
Where the month's anchor dates fall
Two of the common monthly anchor dates in September 2027 land outside the working week or on a closure. The table below resolves each one against the US federal calendar, together with the first working day on or after it.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the US federal calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 1 | Wednesday | Working day | September 1 |
| September 5 | Sunday | Weekend | September 7, 2027 |
| September 10 | Friday | Working day | September 10 |
| September 15 | Wednesday | Working day | September 15 |
| September 20 | Monday | Working day | September 20 |
| September 25 | Saturday | Weekend | September 27, 2027 |
| September 30 | Thursday | Working day | September 30 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in September 2027
An invoice dated the 1st of September on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on October 1, 2027, a working day under the US federal calendar. Terms counted in calendar days move independently of the working week, so the same term written on two consecutive months can settle cleanly in one and roll across a closure in the other.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated September 1 | October 1, 2027 | October 31, 2027 (rolls to November 1, 2027) |
| Dated September 15 | October 15, 2027 | November 14, 2027 (rolls to November 15, 2027) |
| Dated September 30 | October 30, 2027 (rolls to November 1, 2027) | November 29, 2027 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the United States calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
