10 business days is two working weeks, and each Singapore public holiday on a weekday inside the window pushes the answer one working day further out.
Above the threshold, the endpoint rule takes over
Once a period exceeds six days, Order 3 rule 3(6) stops excluding non-court days and rule 3(7) does the remaining work. It provides that where the time prescribed by the Rules, or by any judgment, order or direction, for doing any act expires on a non-court day, the act is in time if done on the next day that is not a non-court day.
That is an endpoint adjustment rather than a counting method. It moves a deadline by a day or two at the end; it does not add a day for every weekend inside the period. A ten-business-day commitment in a contract does the opposite and removes those days from the count throughout, which is why the two land on different dates from the same trigger.
Two working weeks against the wall calendar
Ten working days spans two weekends whatever weekday it starts from. Four calendar days are gone before any gazetted holiday is counted.
| Quantity | Amount |
|---|---|
| Days on the wall calendar | 14 days |
| Working weeks counted | 2 weeks |
| Weeks of calendar time | 2 weeks |
| Months of calendar time | 0.5 months |
| Saturdays and Sundays removed | 4 |
| Closures removed from the count | 0 |
| Day of the week it lands on | Wednesday |
Closures inside these two working weeks
No gazetted Singapore public holiday falls between the reference date and the answer, so every day taken out of this count is a Saturday or a Sunday.
Reading a ten-working-day clause in a Singapore contract
- Check whether the clause says working days or business days, and whether it defines either. Singapore contracts often leave the term to context.
- Check whether it means days the counterparty is open or days gazetted under the Holidays Act. A firm with a regional desk may work through a Singapore holiday.
- Check whether the period starts on the trigger day or the day after. Order 3 rule 3(3) makes a period run from immediately after the specified date, but a contract need not follow the Rules.
