Four calendars, one holiday list

Singapore's public holidays are drawn from the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese lunisolar calendar, the Islamic lunar calendar and the Hindu calendar. New Year's Day, Labour Day, National Day and Christmas Day sit on fixed dates. Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji, Vesak Day and Deepavali all move, and the Islamic dates move by roughly eleven days a year against the Gregorian calendar because the lunar year is shorter.

For a three-week window this has a practical effect that a fixed-date calendar does not produce. A fifteen-working-day period that cleared the holidays comfortably one year can collide with them the next, from the same date in the same month, because the holiday moved rather than the window. Any Singapore date arithmetic more than a year ahead should be treated as provisional until the year's holidays are gazetted.
