Payment periods and working-day periods are different instruments
Singapore statutory payment periods run in calendar days. Section 21(1) of the Employment Act 1968 requires salary to be paid before the expiry of the 7th day after the last day of the salary period, and section 21(2) gives overtime not later than 14 days. Neither excludes a weekend or a gazetted holiday from the count.
That is the general shape of it: where Singapore law fixes a payment obligation it counts calendar days, and where a commercial party wants working days it has to say so in the contract. A term that says thirty days and a term that says thirty business days are six weeks apart in practice, and only one of them is what the drafter usually meant.
Six working weeks, measured
Compare the calendar span below against the flat thirty days a Net 30 term would give you from the same start date. That gap is the reason the distinction is worth drawing.
| Quantity | Amount |
|---|---|
| Days on the wall calendar | 43 days |
| Working weeks counted | 6 weeks |
| Weeks of calendar time | 6.1 weeks |
| Months of calendar time | 1.4 months |
| Saturdays and Sundays removed | 12 |
| Closures removed from the count | 1 |
| Day of the week it lands on | Thursday |

Usually where the obligation is work rather than money.
- Defect rectification and remediation windows, where the supplier needs a fixed quantity of working time whatever the holiday calendar does.
- Transition and handover periods after a disposal or a change of vendor.
- Migration and cutover commitments, where the team can only act on days the business is open.
