Seven is on the far side of the five-day line
This is the most common way a UK deadline goes wrong by a couple of days. Someone reads CPR 2.8(4), takes away the idea that short periods skip weekends, and applies it to a seven-day period. The rule does not reach that far. Its condition is that the specified period "is 5 days or less", and seven is not.
A seven-day period under the CPR therefore runs across whatever weekends and bank holidays it happens to contain, and only the last day moves if it falls on a day the court office is shut. A seven-business-day period in a supply agreement does the opposite: it removes those days from the count and lands wherever the working calendar puts it. Same number, two different dates, and the gap widens as the calendar gets busier.

A seven-day count crosses one or two weekends depending on the weekday it starts from, which is why the calendar span moves even before a bank holiday is involved.

Seven working days as a commercial term
Where a UK contract fixes seven working days, it is a negotiated number rather than a statutory one. We are not aware of a general provision of English law that fixes a seven-working-day period, and the copy here does not pretend otherwise.
- Retailer refund and returns handling once goods are back with the seller, commonly written in working days so a bank holiday weekend cannot shorten the team's time.
- Second-tier support and warranty assessment windows, where five felt tight and ten felt slow.
- Response windows in framework agreements that deliberately sit above the CPR's five-day line so the two are never confused.
One thing seven working days is not
It is not a UK bank clearing period. No rule of English law and no clearing arrangement fixes seven working days for moving money between UK accounts, and an earlier version of this page said otherwise. Where a seven-working-day figure has been quoted for a payment, it is describing somebody's internal handling time, and the contract or the terms of business are where to check it.
