Tasmania's public holiday rules, applied to 2027

Tasmania adds Eight Hours Day on the second Monday of March (s 4(c)) and, since an amendment that commenced on 9 October 2026, Easter Sunday (s 4(da)). In 2027 those days are Eight Hours Day on Monday, March 8 and Easter Sunday on Sunday, March 28.

25 April is a Sunday in 2027. Under s 4(g), a bare date, no weekday is granted, so the holiday costs no working day this year.

The Statutory Holidays Act 2000 substitutes for a weekend New Year's Day or Boxing Day instead of adding to it. The rule is stated in s 4(a) and (j), which read 'unless ... in which case' and so substitute, while s 4(ia) adds a Monday after a Saturday Christmas. Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and stays a public holiday, with Monday, December 27 added; Boxing Day falls on a Sunday, and s 4(j) substitutes Tuesday, December 28 for it.

Easter Tuesday (Tuesday, March 30 in 2027) is a holiday under s 6 only for persons in a class referred to in section 6 of the Industrial Relations (Commonwealth Powers) Act 2009, so the statewide count treats it as a working day.

Schedule 1 of the Statutory Holidays Act 2000 fixes nine area holidays by rule rather than by date, and in 2027 they fall as follows: Royal Hobart Regatta on Monday, February 8 (the south, from Oatlands and Swansea down, less the West Coast and five named localities), King Island Show on Tuesday, March 2 (King Island), Agfest on Friday, May 7 (Circular Head), Burnie Show on Friday, October 1 (Burnie, Waratah-Wynyard and the West Coast), Royal Launceston Show on Thursday, October 7 (Launceston and six neighbouring municipal areas), Flinders Island Show on Friday, October 15 (Flinders), Royal Hobart Show on Thursday, October 21 (the Regatta's area, with four of its five excluded localities added back), Recreation Day on Monday, November 1 (every part of Tasmania that does not keep the Regatta), and Devonport Show on Friday, November 26 (Devonport, Kentish and Latrobe). Recreation Day covers every part of the state that does not keep the Regatta, so between them the two reach all of Tasmania, yet neither is statewide and neither is in this count.

2027 in Tasmania: the same total by a different route

A year's working days are its weekdays minus the holidays that land on them, and both halves move. The weekday supply depends only on the year's length and the weekday it starts on; the holiday half depends on where each fixed date falls that year. 2027 runs 365 days, 52 whole weeks and one day over. It opens and closes on a Friday, so the spare day is a weekday and the year holds 261 of them.

Eight public holidays in this page's count fall on weekdays (three more land on a weekend and cost nothing), so Tasmania has 253 working days in 2027. That matches 2026 exactly, with the same weekday supply and the same number of weekday holidays. 2028 falls to 251.

Weekend public holidays in 2027, and what Tasmania does with each

A public holiday on a Saturday or Sunday removes no working day; what changes the count is whether Tasmania's law adds a weekday for it or puts one in its place. In Tasmania in 2027:

Long weekends and four-day breaks in Tasmania, 2027

A weekday holiday next to a weekend turns two days off into three; two closures side by side, or one on each side of a weekend, make four or more. That is arithmetic on the dates, so the list moves every year even when the holidays do not. On this page's count, Tasmania has five such breaks in 2027:

• Friday, January 1 to Sunday, January 3: three days, for New Year's Day.

A holiday on a Tuesday or a Thursday leaves one working day stranded between it and the weekend. In 2027 Tasmania has one: Monday, January 25, next to Australia Day. It is a full working day on this page's count even though a day off sits on either side, so a deadline that lands on it is not pushed anywhere.

The count uses the public holidays Tasmania's own Act declares for the whole state, including any weekday the Act adds or substitutes for a weekend holiday. The Royal Hobart Regatta, Recreation Day, Agfest and the show days apply to parts of the state only (section 5 and Schedule 1 of the Statutory Holidays Act 2000), and Easter Tuesday, under s 6, only to persons in a class referred to in section 6 of the Industrial Relations (Commonwealth Powers) Act 2009, so none of them is counted.
