How Tasmania differs from the national Australian holidays

Tasmania differs from the national set in one statewide way: it takes Eight Hours Day on the second Monday of March, marking the introduction of the eight-hour working day. Tasmania does not observe Easter Saturday or Easter Sunday statewide, and it does not move Anzac Day when 25 April falls on a weekend. Easter Tuesday sits outside the statewide set as well: section 6 of the Act confines it to the classes named in section 6 of the Industrial Relations (Commonwealth Powers) Act 2009, which covers groups such as state public sector employees, police officers, and parliamentary and ministerial staff rather than the whole state, so it is left out of the count. Tasmania is the one Australian jurisdiction that substitutes its weekend year-end holidays instead of adding to them. Where the other seven keep a Saturday Boxing Day or New Year's Day as a public holiday and grant an extra weekday on top, the Tasmanian Act says the holiday is that day unless it falls on a weekend, in which case it is the following Monday or Tuesday. So the weekend date is not a public holiday in Tasmania and does not appear in the list below. Christmas Day is the exception: it is unconditional, and the Monday after a Saturday Christmas is added rather than substituted. Two further holidays are area-specific rather than statewide: the Royal Hobart Regatta in the south and Recreation Day in the north, so neither is counted here. The working week is Monday to Friday with a Saturday and Sunday weekend.
