A round number, and what it costs to round

One hundred divides by five, so twenty work weeks is exact. The temptation is to stop there and add twenty weeks to the calendar. That is where the estimate breaks: twenty weeks of calendar is 140 days, but a hundred business days has to fit forty or more weekend days and every public holiday in the window around those hundred working days, so the span always runs past 140. How much longer it runs depends on how many holidays the window catches. The error falls late rather than early every time.

The eleven legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103 are what make the number move. Where a hundred-business-day window starts matters: one that spans late November through January picks up Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, while one that runs through spring may pick up two. The calculator handles that; a mental estimate does not.

"The first hundred days" is a calendar-day expression and always has been. If someone hands you a hundred-day plan, check which unit they meant before you build a schedule on it.

• A hundred calendar days is about three months and a week.
• A hundred business days is about five calendar months.
• Those two are not close. The same number counted in working days runs about half again as long as the same number counted in calendar days, and that gap is more schedule than most executive transition plans have slack for.
