Ireland October deadlines

October 31 is the pay and file date for self-assessed income tax: by then the return for the previous tax year is filed, any balance of that year's tax paid, and preliminary tax for the current year paid. Employers pay September's PAYE liability within 14 days after the end of the month, or 23 days on ROS, and a company with a 31 January year end files its CT1 by October 23. The October public holiday is the last Monday in October, and T2 stays open on it. Revenue gives Saturday 31 October 2026 as the pay and file deadline for 2025 returns, extended to Wednesday 18 November 2026 for those who pay and file on ROS. The October holiday is Monday 26 October.

Ireland reporting cycles and business-day rules

Revenue sets Irish VAT on two-month taxable periods starting in January, March, May, July, September and November: the return and payment are due by the 19th day of the month after each period, extended to the 23rd for ROS filers. An employer's monthly PAYE liability, shown on a Revenue statement built from the month's payroll submissions, is due 14 days after the end of the month, or 23 days for employers who file and pay on ROS. A company files its CT1 return and pays any balance nine months after the end of its accounting period, on or before the 23rd of the ninth month (the 21st if it does not file and pay electronically). T2, the Eurosystem's real-time gross settlement system, which replaced TARGET2 in March 2023, is open Monday to Friday and, for euro settlement, also closed on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 December and 26 December. It does not close for St Patrick's Day (17 March) or for the Irish public holidays in February, June, August and October, and it does close on 1 May, which is an Irish public holiday only when it is the first Monday in May. Under the European Communities (Late Payment in Commercial Transactions) Regulations 2012, as amended in 2013, 2014 and 2016, statutory late payment interest is the ECB main refinancing rate plus 8 percentage points; between undertakings a contract may vary that interest, provided the result is not grossly unfair to the creditor. A payment date or period that a contract between undertakings sets beyond 60 calendar days must be expressly agreed and not grossly unfair to the supplier. Where the contract specifies no date or period for payment, the payment date falls 30 calendar days after the purchaser receives the invoice, after delivery where the invoice arrives first or its date of receipt is uncertain, or after an acceptance or verification procedure where one applies and the invoice arrives no later than it. Interest runs from the day after the payment date.

October 2026 working days compared by country

Working-day counts vary across countries because each country observes its own public holidays. The table below shows October 2026 under 11 of the site's 25 holiday calendars; the summary above gives Ireland's own count.

How October 2026 compares year over year

October 2025 had 22 working days, so October 2026 has 1 fewer working day year over year. On the surrounding months, September 2026 has 22 working days and November 2026 has 21. Looking forward, October 2027 has 20 working days under the same Irish holiday calendar.

Using this calculator in Ireland

Count the 21 business days of October 2026 against Revenue's dates when one is near: VAT for each two-month period is due by the 19th day of the following month, or the 23rd for ROS filers; an employer's PAYE for a month within 14 days after its end, or 23 days on ROS; and a company's CT1 return and balance on or before the 23rd of the ninth month after its accounting period ends (the 21st if it does not file and pay electronically). A euro payment that settles through T2 cannot settle on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 December or 26 December, although T2 does not close for St Patrick's Day or for the Irish public holidays in February, June, August and October. Where a contract specifies no date or period for payment, the Late Payment Regulations 2012, as amended, put the payment date 30 calendar days after the purchaser receives the invoice, after delivery where the invoice arrives first or its date of receipt is uncertain, or after an acceptance or verification procedure where one applies and the invoice arrives no later than it.

How October 2026 is shaped

The headline count answers how many working days October 2026 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the Irish holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.

A 31-day month opening the final quarter

October runs 31 days and opens Q4, the last quarter of the calendar year, so everything deferred earlier arrives inside a period that begins here. It shares its weekday alignment with January in a common year. As a 31-day month it carries three weekdays five times, and which three is decided entirely by the day it opens on.

In October 2026 that comes to 21 working days across 31 calendar days, against 22 in September 2026 and 21 in November 2026.

A late-week start

The month opens on the fourth working day of the week, which leaves only a short tail before the first weekend. The practical consequence is that the month's first genuinely full working week does not begin on the 1st at all. Anything scoped as "we have the first week to do this" has materially less time than the phrase suggests, and the shortfall is visible in the opening run below.

The opening stretch runs from Thursday, October 1 to October 2, two working days before the first break. October 2026 carries 21 working days in total, so that opening block is 10% of the month's working capacity.

Five working stretches

October splits into five working stretches. That is the ordinary shape of a month whose only interruptions are its weekends, and it means the month's internal boundaries are all predictable a year in advance: nothing here depends on a holiday date moving.

The working days of October 2026 arrive in stretches of 2, 5, 5, 5, and 4 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from October 5 to October 9. A task needing more consecutive working days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.

The month is back-loaded. It opens with two consecutive days and closes with four, so the room is at the end rather than the start. That is the safer of the two imbalances, because a slip has somewhere to go, but it also makes the opening week a poor sample of the month.

Three weekdays occur five times

A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In October 2026 the three are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.

Only Thursday and Friday among them are working days, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.

One closure, and where it lands

October 2026 carries a single Irish closure on a working day: October Bank Holiday on Monday, October 26. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.

It sits directly beside a weekend rather than inside a working week, so it extends an existing break instead of creating a new one. That is the cheapest position a holiday can occupy: the month loses a day but keeps its shape.

17 working days pass before the closure and only 4 follow it. With the break past the midpoint, most of the month's capacity has already been spent when it arrives, so anything the closure displaces competes for a shrinking remainder.

The closures around this month

October 2026 carries one Irish closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.

Looking outside the month, the last was August Bank Holiday on August 3, 2026, 59 calendar days before October began and the next is Christmas Day on December 25, 2026, 55 calendar days after it ends.

Across the whole of 2026 the Irish calendar puts 11 closures on working days, of which one falls in October. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.

The month ends over a weekend

October 2026 ends on a Saturday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.

The last working day of October 2026 is Friday, October 30. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, October 28, three calendar days before the month closes.

The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. One calendar day of October follows it with nothing settling on it.

The quarter opens here

October is the first month of Q4. An opening month sets the baseline the rest of the quarter is measured against, and it is the one month where a slip has two further months to be absorbed in. Quarterly targets divided evenly by three ignore the fact that the three months rarely carry equal working-day counts.

Across the whole quarter there are 63 working days, of which 21 fall in October. The other two months carry November 2026 with 21 and December 2026 with 21. All three months of the quarter carry the same working-day count, which happens when their weekday alignments and closures cancel out exactly.

The week's first working day is the scarcest

The first working day of the week is the one October gives least often. Anything anchored to the start of the working week (a weekly kickoff, a Monday-morning cutoff, a start-of-week batch) fires fewer times this month than the calendar count suggests, because a closure has taken one of them out.

Counted as worked rather than as occurring, October 2026 gives Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 5, and Friday 5. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.

Where the month sits in the year

October sits in the middle of 2026 by working-day count under the Irish calendar. The middle of that ranking is where a month's total is least informative on its own, because a mid-ranked month can be a long month carrying closures or a short one carrying none, and the two need different plans.

2026 carries 250 working days in total under the Irish calendar. The longest month of the year is July 2026 with 23 and the shortest is February 2026 with 19, a spread of 4. October ranks 6th of the twelve with 21.

Inside the year's longest clear run

October 2026 sits inside the longest stretch of 2026 with no Irish closure in it. Where a month falls relative to its country's closure clusters changes what the same working-day count is worth: an uninterrupted month inside a long clear run behaves differently from one of equal length wedged between two closures.

Across 2026 the Irish closures fall 3 in Q1, 4 in Q2, 1 in Q3, and 3 in Q4. Every holiday in the Irish data for 2026 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.

The longest uninterrupted run in the 2026 calendar sits between August 3, 2026 and October 26, 2026, 84 calendar days with no Irish closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.

Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern

Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the Irish calendar is no exception.

2026 opens its Irish closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2026 and ends them with St Stephen's Day (additional) on December 28, 2026. The densest month of the year is April 2026 with two closures on working days.

One working day fewer than last year

October 2026 has one working day fewer than October 2025: 21 against 22. On a monthly target that is roughly 5% less working time for the same calendar period, which is the size of gap that shows up as an unexplained miss rather than as a known constraint.

October opens 2025 on a Wednesday, 2026 on a Thursday, and 2027 on a Friday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, October 2027 carries 20 working days.

Anchor dates that do not fall on working days

Three of the common monthly anchor dates in October 2026 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.

The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.

Net terms dated in October 2026

An invoice dated the 1st of October on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on October 31, 2026, which is not a working day under the Irish calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.

Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the Ireland calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many business days are in October 2026 under the Irish holiday calendar?
October 2026 has 21 working days under the Irish holiday calendar. The month spans 31 calendar days, of which 9 fall on a weekend and 1 is an Irish holiday that lands on a weekday. The remaining 21 weekdays are countable as working days for invoicing, deadline tracking, and contract math.
Which Ireland holidays affect October 2026?
October 2026 contains one Irish holiday: October Bank Holiday on Monday, October 26. The calculator skips it. Regional or industry-specific closures may add further non-working days for narrower contract definitions; layer them into the calculator's Advanced options if needed.
Why is St Brigid's Day included from 2023 onward?
S.I. No. 50 of 2022, made under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, prescribed St Brigid's Day as Ireland's tenth public holiday from 2023: the first Monday in February each year, or 1 February itself when that falls on a Friday. The explanatory note to the regulations ties the day to Imbolc and St Brigid, and names Monday 6 February 2023 as the first.
What happens when an Irish public holiday falls on a weekend?
It stays a public holiday on its own date: the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 moves none of them. The employee's benefit becomes a paid day off within a month, an extra day of annual leave or an extra day's pay, and the Workplace Relations Commission states that there is no legal entitlement to have the next working day off. The Banking & Payments Federation Ireland's bank-holiday lists still close the banks on the next free weekday after each weekend public holiday they cover. Government offices close it after a Sunday holiday (civil-service Circular 5/1984); after a Saturday one the circular only lets a department grant its staff a day off. This calculator counts that weekday as closed, marked (additional), where banks and Government offices both close it, which after a Saturday holiday means a department's own closure list shows it closed, and as a business day otherwise. Easter Monday, St Brigid's Day and the Monday holidays in May, June, August and October always fall on a weekday.
Why does the business-day count vary year to year?
Two things shift the monthly count for Ireland. First, the day of the week the first of the month lands on changes the count of each weekday. Second, Irish holidays anchored to a fixed date shift their weekday across years. Some years a fixed-date holiday lands on a weekend; some countries shift the observance to an adjacent weekday and some absorb it into the weekend. October 2025 had 22 working days, so October 2026 has 1 fewer working day year over year.
When is the last working day of October 2026?
The last working day of October 2026 under the Irish calendar is Friday, October 30. The month's last calendar day is Saturday, October 31, which is not a working day, so month-end processing has to happen one calendar day earlier than the calendar suggests. Counting back, the third-to-last working day is Wednesday, October 28.
How many working days in a row does October 2026 offer?
October 2026 has 21 working days in total, but they do not run consecutively. They arrive in five stretches of 2, 5, 5, 5, and 4 days, so the longest unbroken run is five days, from October 5 to October 9. No working day in the month is isolated between two closures.
