India October deadlines
Gandhi Jayanti, 2 October, is a national holiday, and Dussehra and Diwali move with the lunar calendar. A monthly GST taxpayer files GSTR-3B for September by October 20, and a quarterly-scheme taxpayer files the July to September return by October 22 or October 24, depending on its state or union territory. Provident fund contributions for September are remitted within fifteen days of the close of the month, by October 15 (Employees' Provident Funds Scheme, 2026, paragraph 28). CBDT Circular 07/2026 of 28 September 2026 extends the specified date for the tax audit report for assessment year 2026-27 to 21 October 2026, and the return date for the persons in serial number 2 of the table in section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 from 31 October to 21 November 2026. The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee meets on 5, 6 and 7 October 2026. Dussehra is Tuesday 20 October 2026.

India reporting cycles and business-day rules
This calculator counts Monday to Friday and leaves out the 14 holidays that the Department of Personnel and Training's Office Memorandum on the 2027 holidays (F.No.12/2/2023-JCA, dated 16 July 2026) lists as compulsory for Central Government administrative offices, plus Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti. Paragraph 3.2 of that memorandum allows no substitute holiday when a festival holiday falls on a weekly off or another non-working day, or when more than one festival falls on the same day, and the calculator adds none. Under rule 61 of the CGST Rules, 2017 a monthly GSTR-3B is due on or before the 20th of the following month, and a quarterly one on or before the 22nd or the 24th of the month after the quarter, depending on the state or union territory of the principal place of business. Section 408(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 has advance tax paid in four instalments, due on or before 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March. These pages give those dates as the rule and the section state them and adjust none for a Sunday or a holiday.

How October 2026 compares year over year
October 2025 had 21 working days, so October 2026 has 1 fewer working day year over year. On the surrounding months, September 2026 has 22 working days and November 2026 has 20. Looking forward, October 2027 has 20 working days under the same Indian Central Government holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in India
The 20 working days in October 2026 are the month's Monday-to-Friday days less the dates in this calculator's data: the 14 holidays that are compulsory for Central Government administrative offices and Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti. For a project or contract timeline with a Central Government office, add the three further days that apply to that office under Advanced options. Bank holidays are not this list: the Reserve Bank of India's holiday page marks each holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act separately for each of its regional offices, so for a count that follows a bank, read that office's list.

How October 2026 is shaped
The headline count answers how many working days October 2026 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the Indian Central Government holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
A 31-day month opening the final quarter
October runs 31 days and opens Q4, the last quarter of the calendar year, so everything deferred earlier arrives inside a period that begins here. It shares its weekday alignment with January in a common year. As a 31-day month it carries three weekdays five times, and which three is decided entirely by the day it opens on.
In October 2026 that comes to 20 working days across 31 calendar days, against 22 in September 2026 and 20 in November 2026.
A late-week start
The month opens on the fourth working day of the week, which leaves only a short tail before the first weekend. The practical consequence is that the month's first genuinely full working week does not begin on the 1st at all. Anything scoped as "we have the first week to do this" has materially less time than the phrase suggests, and the shortfall is visible in the opening run below.
The month's first working day is Thursday, October 1, and October 2026 carries 20 working days in total.
One working day stands alone
One working day in October 2026 is walled in on both sides. Monday, October 19 sits between the Saturday and Sunday weekend and Dussehra, with no adjacent working day on either side. That single day still counts toward the month's total, but it cannot carry work that needs a second consecutive day, and anything that slips on it slips across a full closure rather than overnight.
The working days of October 2026 arrive in stretches of 1, 5, 5, 1, 3, and 5 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from October 5 to October 9. A task needing more consecutive working days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is back-loaded. It opens with one consecutive day and closes with five, so the room is at the end rather than the start. That is the safer of the two imbalances, because a slip has somewhere to go, but it also makes the opening week a poor sample of the month.
Three weekdays occur five times
A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In October 2026 the three are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.
Only Thursday and Friday among them are working days, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.
Two closures in the month
Two Indian Central Government holidays fall on working days in October 2026: Gandhi Jayanti on Friday, October 2 and Dussehra on Tuesday, October 20. Two closures remove two days from the total, but their effect on the month's usable structure depends on how far apart they are.
They sit 18 calendar days apart, one in each half of the month, so October is interrupted twice at roughly even spacing rather than once heavily. That spreads the loss but leaves no long uninterrupted stretch in either half.
Exactly one working day passes before the closure. A single day of runway is not enough to start anything that has to continue, so in practice the month begins after the break rather than before it.
The closures around this month
October 2026 carries two Indian Central Government closures of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was Milad-un-Nabi on August 26, 2026, 36 calendar days before October began and the next is Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24, 2026, 24 calendar days after it ends.
Across the whole of 2026 the Indian Central Government calendar puts 12 closures on working days, of which two fall in October. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
The month ends over a weekend
October 2026 ends on a Saturday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.
The last working day of October 2026 is Friday, October 30. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, October 28, three calendar days before the month closes.
The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. One calendar day of October follows it with nothing settling on it.
The quarter opens here
October is the first month of Q4. An opening month sets the baseline the rest of the quarter is measured against, and it is the one month where a slip has two further months to be absorbed in. Quarterly targets divided evenly by three ignore the fact that the three months rarely carry equal working-day counts.
Across the whole quarter there are 62 working days, of which 20 fall in October. The other two months carry November 2026 with 20 and December 2026 with 22. It sits between the other two, which makes it the month where a quarterly plan is least likely to be thrown off by the calendar alone.
The week's second working day is the scarcest
The second working day of the week is the one October gives least often. Weekly cycles that run one day behind the start of the week, which is where most reporting handovers sit, lose an occurrence relative to the rest.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, October 2026 gives Monday 4, Tuesday 3, Wednesday 4, Thursday 5, and Friday 4. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
Toward the short end of the year
October sits among the shorter working months of 2026 under the Indian Central Government calendar. A month reaches this end of the ranking either by being short or by absorbing closures, and the two produce the same headline number while behaving differently: a closure fragments the month, a shorter calendar does not.
2026 carries 249 working days in total under the Indian Central Government calendar. The longest month of the year is July 2026 with 23 and the shortest is May 2026 with 19, a spread of 4. October ranks 10th of the twelve with 20.
Inside one of the year's denser months
October 2026 carries more than one Indian Central Government closure, which puts it among the year's denser months. Closures are never spread evenly across a year, so a month's own count says as much about the country's calendar as about the month.
Across 2026 the Indian Central Government closures fall 2 in Q1, 5 in Q2, 1 in Q3, and 4 in Q4. A further three holidays land on the Saturday and Sunday weekend and cost no working day at all, which is why a country's holiday count and its working-day loss are different numbers.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2026 calendar sits between January 26, 2026 and March 31, 2026, 64 calendar days with no Indian Central Government closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the Indian Central Government calendar is no exception.
2026 opens its Indian Central Government closures with Republic Day on January 26, 2026 and ends them with Christmas Day on December 25, 2026. The densest month of the year is April 2026 with two closures on working days.
One working day fewer than last year
October 2026 has one working day fewer than October 2025: 20 against 21. On a monthly target that is roughly 5% less working time for the same calendar period, which is the size of gap that shows up as an unexplained miss rather than as a known constraint.
October opens 2025 on a Wednesday, 2026 on a Thursday, and 2027 on a Friday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, October 2027 carries 20 working days.
Anchor dates that do not fall on working days
Four of the common monthly anchor dates in October 2026 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the Indian Central Government calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 1 | Thursday | Working day | October 1 |
| October 5 | Monday | Working day | October 5 |
| October 10 | Saturday | Weekend | October 12, 2026 |
| October 15 | Thursday | Working day | October 15 |
| October 20 | Tuesday | Closed: Dussehra | October 21, 2026 |
| October 25 | Sunday | Weekend | October 26, 2026 |
| October 31 | Saturday | Weekend | November 2, 2026 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in October 2026
An invoice dated the 1st of October on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on October 31, 2026, which is not a working day under the Indian Central Government calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated October 1 | October 31, 2026 (rolls to November 2, 2026) | November 30, 2026 |
| Dated October 15 | November 14, 2026 (rolls to November 16, 2026) | December 14, 2026 |
| Dated October 31 | November 30, 2026 | December 30, 2026 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the India calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
