United States October deadlines
October 15 is the extended date for both the individual return (Form 1040, extended on Form 4868) and the calendar-year C corporation return (Form 1120, extended on Form 7004). The federal fiscal year begins October 1. Columbus Day on the second Monday produces a split that catches treasury teams out: it is a federal holiday, the SIFMA-recommended bond market closes, and the NYSE stays open.

Those dates in 2026
Every date named above falls on a working day in 2026 under the US federal calendar. That is worth checking rather than assuming: the same calendar date moves through the week from year to year, so a date that settles cleanly this year may not next year.

United States reporting cycles and business-day rules
Periods under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure are not counted in business days. Rule 6(a)(1) excludes the day of the event that triggers the period and counts every day after it, including intermediate Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays; when the last day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the period runs to the end of the next day that is none of those. Before the 2009 amendment the rule left intermediate Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays out of periods shorter than 11 days, and that exclusion no longer applies. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, this calculator leaves out the Friday before it, which 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) makes the holiday for federal employees on a Monday-to-Friday workweek; the Federal Reserve Banks stay open that Friday. Estimated tax payments of a corporation are due on the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 12th months of its tax year, which for a calendar-year corporation is April 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15. IRS Publication 509 states the general rule that an act due on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday is timely on the next day that is none of those, and by legal holiday it means any legal holiday in the District of Columbia.

How October 2026 compares year over year
October 2025 had 22 business days, so October 2026 has 1 fewer working day year over year. On the surrounding months, September 2026 has 21 business days and November 2026 has 19. Looking forward, October 2027 has 20 business days under the same US federal holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in United States
The 21 business days in October 2026 are the count to use for invoice due dates, contract deadlines and SLA windows stated in business days. Federal contracts under the FAR count in calendar days, because FAR 2.101 defines a day as a calendar day unless otherwise specified. For an invoice payment, FAR 32.904(b)(1) sets the due date at the later of the 30th day after the designated billing office receives a proper invoice and the 30th day after government acceptance of the supplies or services. Paragraphs (c) through (f) of the same section set other dates for architect-engineer, construction, cost-reimbursement service and food contracts.

How October 2026 is shaped
The headline count answers how many business days October 2026 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the US federal holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
A 31-day month opening the final quarter
October runs 31 days and opens Q4, the last quarter of the calendar year, so everything deferred earlier arrives inside a period that begins here. It shares its weekday alignment with January in a common year. As a 31-day month it carries three weekdays five times, and which three is decided entirely by the day it opens on.
In October 2026 that comes to 21 business days across 31 calendar days, against 21 in September 2026 and 19 in November 2026.
A late-week start
The month opens on the fourth working day of the week, which leaves only a short tail before the first weekend. The practical consequence is that the month's first genuinely full working week does not begin on the 1st at all. Anything scoped as "we have the first week to do this" has materially less time than the phrase suggests, and the shortfall is visible in the opening run below.
The opening stretch runs from Thursday, October 1 to October 2, two business days before the first break. October 2026 carries 21 business days in total, so that opening block is 10% of the month's working capacity.
Five working stretches
October splits into five working stretches. That is the ordinary shape of a month whose only interruptions are its weekends, and it means the month's internal boundaries are all predictable a year in advance: nothing here depends on a holiday date moving.
The working days of October 2026 arrive in stretches of 2, 5, 4, 5, and 5 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from October 5 to October 9. A task needing more consecutive business days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is back-loaded. It opens with two consecutive days and closes with five, so the room is at the end rather than the start. That is the safer of the two imbalances, because a slip has somewhere to go, but it also makes the opening week a poor sample of the month.
Three weekdays occur five times
A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In October 2026 the three are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.
Only Thursday and Friday among them are working days, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.
One closure, and where it lands
October 2026 carries a single US federal closure on a working day: Columbus Day on Monday, October 12. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.
It sits directly beside a weekend rather than inside a working week, so it extends an existing break instead of creating a new one. That is the cheapest position a holiday can occupy: the month loses a day but keeps its shape.
seven working days pass before the closure and 14 follow it, which puts the break just short of the month's midpoint. A closure near the middle divides the month into two usable halves rather than trimming one end of it.
The closures around this month
October 2026 carries one US federal closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was Labor Day on September 7, 2026, 24 calendar days before October began and the next is Veterans Day on November 11, 2026, 11 calendar days after it ends.
Across the whole of 2026 the US federal calendar puts 11 closures on working days, of which one falls in October. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
The month ends over a weekend
October 2026 ends on a Saturday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.
The last working day of October 2026 is Friday, October 30. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, October 28, three calendar days before the month closes.
The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. One calendar day of October follows it with nothing settling on it.
The quarter opens here
October is the first month of Q4. An opening month sets the baseline the rest of the quarter is measured against, and it is the one month where a slip has two further months to be absorbed in. Quarterly targets divided evenly by three ignore the fact that the three months rarely carry equal working-day counts.
Across the whole quarter there are 62 business days, of which 21 fall in October. The other two months carry November 2026 with 19 and December 2026 with 22. It sits between the other two, which makes it the month where a quarterly plan is least likely to be thrown off by the calendar alone.
The week's first working day is the scarcest
The first working day of the week is the one October gives least often. Anything anchored to the start of the working week (a weekly kickoff, a Monday-morning cutoff, a start-of-week batch) fires fewer times this month than the calendar count suggests, because a closure has taken one of them out.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, October 2026 gives Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 5, and Friday 5. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
Where the month sits in the year
October sits in the middle of 2026 by working-day count under the US federal calendar. The middle of that ranking is where a month's total is least informative on its own, because a mid-ranked month can be a long month carrying closures or a short one carrying none, and the two need different plans.
2026 carries 250 business days in total under the US federal calendar. The longest month of the year is March 2026 with 22 and the shortest is November 2026 with 19, a spread of 3. October ranks 8th of the twelve with 21.
United States closures across the year
A month's working-day count only means something against the country's whole calendar. Two countries that share a weekend and happen to have the same closure-free month can still run very different years, and United States is placed as follows.
Across 2026 the US federal closures fall 3 in Q1, 2 in Q2, 2 in Q3, and 4 in Q4. Every holiday in the US federal data for 2026 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2026 calendar sits between February 16, 2026 and May 25, 2026, 98 calendar days with no US federal closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the US federal calendar is no exception.
2026 opens its US federal closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2026 and ends them with Christmas Day on December 25, 2026. The densest month of the year is January 2026 with two closures on working days.
One working day fewer than last year
October 2026 has one business day fewer than October 2025: 21 against 22. On a monthly target that is roughly 5% less working time for the same calendar period, which is the size of gap that shows up as an unexplained miss rather than as a known constraint.
October opens 2025 on a Wednesday, 2026 on a Thursday, and 2027 on a Friday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, October 2027 carries 20 business days.
Anchor dates that do not fall on working days
Three of the common monthly anchor dates in October 2026 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the US federal calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 1 | Thursday | Working day | October 1 |
| October 5 | Monday | Working day | October 5 |
| October 10 | Saturday | Weekend | October 13, 2026 |
| October 15 | Thursday | Working day | October 15 |
| October 20 | Tuesday | Working day | October 20 |
| October 25 | Sunday | Weekend | October 26, 2026 |
| October 31 | Saturday | Weekend | November 2, 2026 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in October 2026
An invoice dated the 1st of October on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on October 31, 2026, which is not a working day under the US federal calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated October 1 | October 31, 2026 (rolls to November 2, 2026) | November 30, 2026 |
| Dated October 15 | November 14, 2026 (rolls to November 16, 2026) | December 14, 2026 |
| Dated October 31 | November 30, 2026 | December 30, 2026 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the United States calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
