Appenzell Ausserrhoden Public Holidays 2026
Last reviewed: October 14, 2026 · Holiday data: October 8, 2026
The 2026 table for Appenzell Ausserrhoden lists 7 dates: 6 fall on a weekday and 1 on a weekend. That leaves 255 working days in 2026. Like the Switzerland calculator, this page counts Monday to Friday as working days; what changes is the holiday list.
How Appenzell Ausserrhoden differs from the Switzerland calculator
Appenzell Ausserrhoden has no separate law on rest days. Its ordinance on the federal Labour Act (bGS 822.11, Art. 7) equates Neujahr, Karfreitag, Ostermontag, Auffahrt, Pfingstmontag and both Christmas days with Sundays, so with the Bundesfeiertag on 1 August its list is this site's eight-day Swiss baseline, with one rule of its own: the second Christmas day, Stephanstag (26 December), is not kept when Christmas Day falls on a Monday or a Friday. Christmas 2026 is a Friday, so Saturday 26 December 2026 is not a holiday and no count changes. Christmas 2027 is a Saturday and Stephanstag is kept, so the canton's 2027 list is the baseline and this site has no separate 2027 page for it. Christmas 2028 is a Monday, so Tuesday 26 December 2028 is a working day in Ausserrhoden and the canton has one more working day that year than the baseline. The canton's law on Sunday trading (bGS 822.31, Art. 1) closes shops on Sundays and on these state-recognised holidays.

The second Christmas day in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, 2026
Appenzell Ausserrhoden has no rest-day act of its own: its list is in Art. 7 of the cantonal ordinance on the federal Labour Act (bGS 822.11), which equates Neujahr, Karfreitag, Ostermontag, Auffahrt, Pfingstmontag and both Christmas days with Sundays, and adds that the second Christmas day is not kept when the first falls on a Monday or a Friday.
What it means in 2026
In 2026 Christmas Day is a Friday, so Art. 7 drops Stephanstag, Saturday, December 26, 2026. That day is a Saturday, which this calculator never counts as a working day, so the drop changes no count: the canton has 255 working days in 2026, the same as the Switzerland calculator. It changes something else: Art. 1 of the Sunday trading law closes shops on Sundays and state-recognised holidays, and Saturday, December 26, 2026 is not one of them in Ausserrhoden.
The rule is Ausserrhoden's own. Appenzell Innerrhoden's law (GS 822.200, Art. 2) keeps Stephanstag only if celebrating it does not make three rest days in a row; how that canton's government reads it is explained on its page on this site: Appenzell Innerrhoden public holidays 2026.
The Art. 7 rule, 2026 to 2035
Computed from the wording of Art. 7 as it stands today; an amendment to the ordinance would change these rows. This site has canton pages for 2026 and 2028, the years in its data in which the canton's list differs from the Switzerland calculator's.
