Brazil January deadlines
Confraternização Universal on January 1 is a feriado nacional under Lei 662/1949 and, like every national holiday, not a business day for financial-market operations under article 6 of Resolução CMN 4.880/2020; the STR, the Banco Central's real-time settlement system, runs only on those business days (Resolução BCB 105/2021, art. 17). A company's social-security contributions on December's pay are due by January 20, or on the business day before when banks do not open that day (Lei 8.212/1991, art. 30, I, b, and § 2º, II), and the FGTS deposit on December's pay is due by the 20th as well (Lei 8.036/1990, art. 15). The Copom holds eight ordinary meetings a year on a calendar the Banco Central publishes in advance by comunicado, and releases each decision from 18:30 on the meeting's second day.

Brazil reporting cycles and business-day rules
Brazilian business days in this calculator follow the financial system rather than the labour calendar, and its thirteen closure days a year are of three kinds. Nine are feriados nacionais by federal statute: seven under article 1 of Lei 662/1949 as amended by Lei 10.607/2002, 12 October under Lei 6.802/1980 and 20 November under Lei 14.759/2023. Good Friday reads two ways: the federal government's annual list prints it as a feriado nacional, while Lei 9.093/1995 counts it among the religious holidays that municipal law declares, and FEBRABAN's bank-holiday calendar lists it. Carnival Monday and Tuesday and Corpus Christi are only ponto facultativo for federal staff, under the annual portaria of the Ministério da Gestão e da Inovação em Serviços Públicos. The calculator counts them because article 6 of Resolução CMN 4.880/2020 takes them, with weekends and national holidays, out of the business days for financial-market operations, and the Banco Central's STR settles only on the days that remain. B3's 2026 trading calendar also has no session on 24 or 31 December, which are business days for the financial system and which this calculator counts as business days. Two payroll deadlines share the 20th of the month after the payroll month: the FGTS deposit under article 15 of Lei 8.036/1990, as amended by Lei 14.438/2022, and the social-security contributions a company withholds and owes under article 30, I, b of Lei 8.212/1991, which fall due on the business day before when there is no banking on the 20th. The 13º salário comes from Lei 4.090/1962, not the CLT, and Lei 4.749/1965 sets its payment by December 20 with a half-salary advance between February and November.

How January 2027 compares year over year
January 2026 had 21 dias úteis, so January 2027 has 1 fewer working day year over year. On the surrounding months, December 2026 has 22 dias úteis and February 2027 has 18. Looking forward, January 2028 has 21 dias úteis under the same Brazilian bank holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in Brazil
A São Paulo treasury team uses the 20-day January 2027 count because the Banco Central do Brasil's STR, which settles transfers in real time and operation by operation, runs only on the days Resolução CMN 4.880/2020 treats as business days for financial-market operations. A Belo Horizonte payroll controller works to the two deadlines that share the 20th of the month after the payroll month, the FGTS deposit under Lei 8.036/1990 and the social-security contributions under Lei 8.212/1991, and knows the social-security payment moves to the business day before when banks are shut on the 20th. The same controller schedules the 13º salário, whose half-salary advance is due between February and November and whose balance is due by December 20 under Lei 4.749/1965.

How January 2027 is shaped
The headline count answers how many dias úteis January 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the Brazilian bank holiday calendar and a working week that treats sábado and domingo as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
The month that opens the year and the quarter together
January is one of only four months that begins a quarter, and the only one that begins a calendar year at the same time. Its 31 days are the joint longest, and its first day is the single date on which the largest number of annual cycles reset at once. That concentration is the reason a January working-day count is worth checking rather than assuming: every cycle that starts here inherits whatever the month's alignment gives it.
In January 2027 that comes to 20 dias úteis across 31 calendar days, against 22 in December 2026 and 18 in February 2027.
The month opens on a closure
January 2027 begins on a public holiday. Confraternização Universal falls on the 1st, which is a Friday this year, so the calendar month and the working month start on different dates. Any obligation written as "the first of the month" and any obligation written as "the first dias útei" point at different days in January 2027, and a schedule that treats them as interchangeable is wrong by at least one day here.
The month's first working day is Monday, January 4, and January 2027 carries 20 dias úteis in total.
How the working days break up
The working days of January 2027 fall into four separate stretches. The count of stretches matters more than it looks: a month's total is the sum of its runs, but a deliverable that needs consecutive days is limited by the longest single run, and the two numbers move independently.
The working days of January 2027 arrive in stretches of 5, 5, 5, and 5 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from January 4 to January 8. A task needing more consecutive dias úteis than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is balanced end to end. Its opening and closing stretches are the same length, five days each, so work pushed from the start of January to its end finds the same amount of room it left behind. That symmetry is the exception rather than the rule.
Three weekdays occur five times
A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In January 2027 the three are Sunday, Friday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.
Only Friday among them is a working day, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the sábado and domingo weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.
One closure, and where it lands
January 2027 carries a single Brazilian bank closure on a working day: Confraternização Universal on Friday, January 1. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.
It sits directly beside a weekend rather than inside a working week, so it extends an existing break instead of creating a new one. That is the cheapest position a holiday can occupy: the month loses a day but keeps its shape.
The closure arrives before any working day has passed, so January is interrupted before it has started and the whole of its 20 remaining dias úteis sit after the break.
The closures around this month
January 2027 carries one Brazilian bank closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was Natal on December 25, 2026, 7 calendar days before January began and the next is Carnaval (segunda) on February 8, 2027, 8 calendar days after it ends.
Across the whole of 2027 the Brazilian bank calendar puts ten closures on working days, of which one falls in January. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
The month ends over a weekend
January 2027 ends on a Sunday, which this calendar treats as weekend. Month-end processing cannot happen on the last calendar day, so it happens earlier and the last few dates of the month carry no settlement at all. The distance between the final working day and the final calendar day is where month-end reconciliations go missing.
The last working day of January 2027 is Friday, January 29. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, January 27, four calendar days before the month closes.
The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. Two calendar days of January follow it with nothing settling on them.
The quarter opens here
January is the first month of Q1. An opening month sets the baseline the rest of the quarter is measured against, and it is the one month where a slip has two further months to be absorbed in. Quarterly targets divided evenly by three ignore the fact that the three months rarely carry equal working-day counts.
Across the whole quarter there are 60 dias úteis, of which 20 fall in January. The other two months carry February 2027 with 18 and March 2027 with 22. It sits between the other two, which makes it the month where a quarterly plan is least likely to be thrown off by the calendar alone.
Every working weekday occurs the same number of times
January 2027 works each weekday of its week the same number of times. That is the flat case, and it is the only one where a weekly recurring commitment costs the same whichever weekday it is pinned to. It happens when the month's length and its closures happen to cancel, not because the month is regular: the calendar census above and this one can agree for quite different reasons.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, January 2027 gives Monday 4, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 4, and Friday 4. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
Where the month sits in the year
January sits in the middle of 2027 by working-day count under the Brazilian bank calendar. The middle of that ranking is where a month's total is least informative on its own, because a mid-ranked month can be a long month carrying closures or a short one carrying none, and the two need different plans.
2027 carries 251 dias úteis in total under the Brazilian bank calendar. The longest month of the year is December 2027 with 23 and the shortest is February 2027 with 18, a spread of 5. January ranks 8th of the twelve with 20.
Brazil closures across the year
A month's working-day count only means something against the country's whole calendar. Two countries that share a weekend and happen to have the same closure-free month can still run very different years, and Brazil is placed as follows.
Across 2027 the Brazilian bank closures fall 4 in Q1, 2 in Q2, 1 in Q3, and 3 in Q4. A further three holidays land on the sábado and domingo weekend and cost no working day at all, which is why a country's holiday count and its working-day loss are different numbers.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between May 27, 2027 and September 7, 2027, 103 calendar days with no Brazilian bank closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the Brazilian bank calendar is no exception.
2027 opens its Brazilian bank closures with Confraternização Universal on January 1, 2027 and ends them with Proclamação da República on November 15, 2027. The densest month of the year is February 2027 with two closures on working days.
One working day fewer than last year
January 2027 has one dias útei fewer than January 2026: 20 against 21. On a monthly target that is roughly 5% less working time for the same calendar period, which is the size of gap that shows up as an unexplained miss rather than as a known constraint.
January opens 2026 on a Thursday, 2027 on a Friday, and 2028 on a Saturday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, January 2028 carries 21 dias úteis.
Anchor dates that do not fall on working days
Three of the common monthly anchor dates in January 2027 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the Brazilian bank calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Friday | Closed: Confraternização Universal | January 4, 2027 |
| January 5 | Tuesday | Working day | January 5 |
| January 10 | Sunday | Weekend | January 11, 2027 |
| January 15 | Friday | Working day | January 15 |
| January 20 | Wednesday | Working day | January 20 |
| January 25 | Monday | Working day | January 25 |
| January 31 | Sunday | Weekend | February 1, 2027 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in January 2027
An invoice dated the 1st of January on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on January 31, 2027, which is not a working day under the Brazilian bank calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated January 1 | January 31, 2027 (rolls to February 1, 2027) | March 2, 2027 |
| Dated January 15 | February 14, 2027 (rolls to February 15, 2027) | March 16, 2027 |
| Dated January 31 | March 2, 2027 | April 1, 2027 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the Brazil calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
