United Kingdom May deadlines
P60s must reach every employee who was on the payroll at April 5 by May 31. For a VAT quarter that ended March 31, the deadline for the online return and for payment is usually May 7, one calendar month and seven days after the period ends. A private company with a March 31 year-end has nine months to file its accounts under section 442 of the Companies Act 2006, so its Companies House deadline is December 31. For England and Wales, gov.uk lists two bank holidays in May: the early May bank holiday and the last Monday in May, which Schedule 1 to the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 names. The Monetary Policy Committee makes no announcement in May 2027: the Bank of England's eight dates for the year include Thursday 29 April and Thursday 17 June, and four of the eight come with a Monetary Policy Report.

United Kingdom reporting cycles and business-day rules
HMRC's guidance gives PAYE two separate dates. An employer sends the Full Payment Submission on or before its employees' payday, even if it pays HMRC quarterly instead of monthly, with the exceptions HMRC lists for sending one after payday. An employer that pays monthly pays its PAYE bill by the 22nd of the next tax month, and a cheque sent through the post must reach HMRC by the 19th. A tax month starts on the 6th. The Bank of England describes the CHAPS system as usually open from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, excluding bank or public holidays in England and Wales, and says customer payments must be submitted by 5.40pm. Section 442 of the Companies Act 2006 gives a private company nine months after the end of the relevant accounting reference period to file its accounts, with other periods for a first accounting reference period of more than twelve months and for a shortened one. Section 443 counts that period in months: it ends with the date in the ninth following month that corresponds to the last day of the reference period, or with the last day of that month where the reference period ends on the last day of a month.

How May 2027 compares year over year
May 2026 also had 19 working days, so the working capacity is unchanged year over year. On the surrounding months, April 2027 has 22 working days and June 2027 has 22. Looking forward, May 2028 has 21 working days under the same England and Wales bank holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in United Kingdom
With the bank holidays of England and Wales left out, May 2027 has 19 working days from Monday to Friday. Where your contract counts a period in business days, the UK calculator on this site counts it with the bank holidays of England and Wales. Court time limits under the Civil Procedure Rules are a separate matter. Rule 2.8 computes a period expressed as a number of days as clear days, which leaves out the day on which the period begins and, if the end of the period is defined by reference to an event, the day of that event. Where the specified period is 5 days or less, a Saturday, Sunday, Bank Holiday, Christmas Day or Good Friday in it does not count. For VAT, HMRC gives the deadline for submitting a return online, which is also the deadline for paying, as usually one calendar month and 7 days after the end of an accounting period, and says the return and the payment must reach it on or before the deadline even if it is on a weekend or bank holiday.

How May 2027 is shaped
The headline count answers how many working days May 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the England and Wales bank holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
The middle month of the second quarter
May runs 31 days and sits in the middle of Q2, the position with neither a quarter opening nor a quarter close to anchor it. It shares its weekday alignment with January in a common year, so the two months carry the same underlying structure twelve months apart. A 31-day month always carries three weekdays five times, which is what makes its working-day count the most sensitive of the four month lengths to where it starts.
In May 2027 that comes to 19 working days across 31 calendar days, against 22 in April 2027 and 22 in June 2027.
The month opens across a weekend
The 1st of May is a Saturday, a weekend day under the England and Wales bank calendar, whose week runs against a Saturday and Sunday weekend. Nothing that settles on working days moves on it. A month that opens this way loses its first working day to the calendar before any holiday is counted, and monthly cycles keyed to the 1st all resolve forward to the same date, which concentrates them.
The month's first working day is Tuesday, May 4, and May 2027 carries 19 working days in total.
How the working days break up
The working days of May 2027 fall into four separate stretches. The count of stretches matters more than it looks: a month's total is the sum of its runs, but a deliverable that needs consecutive days is limited by the longest single run, and the two numbers move independently.
The working days of May 2027 arrive in stretches of 4, 5, 5, and 5 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from May 10 to May 14. A task needing more consecutive working days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is back-loaded. It opens with four consecutive days and closes with five, so the room is at the end rather than the start. That is the safer of the two imbalances, because a slip has somewhere to go, but it also makes the opening week a poor sample of the month.
Three weekdays occur five times
A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In May 2027 the three are Sunday, Monday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.
Only Monday among them is a working day, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.
Two closures in the month
Two England and Wales bank holidays fall on working days in May 2027: Early May Bank Holiday on Monday, May 3 and Spring Bank Holiday on Monday, May 31. Two closures remove two days from the total, but their effect on the month's usable structure depends on how far apart they are.
They sit 28 calendar days apart, one in each half of the month, so May is interrupted twice at roughly even spacing rather than once heavily. That spreads the loss but leaves no long uninterrupted stretch in either half.
The closure arrives before any working day has passed, so May is interrupted before it has started and the whole of its 19 remaining working days sit after the break.
The closures around this month
May 2027 carries two England and Wales bank closures of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was Easter Monday on March 29, 2027, 33 calendar days before May began and the next is Summer Bank Holiday on August 30, 2027, 91 calendar days after it ends.
Across the whole of 2027 the England and Wales bank calendar puts eight closures on working days, of which two fall in May. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
The month ends on a closure
The last calendar day of May 2027 is a public holiday: Spring Bank Holiday, falling on a Monday. A month-end obligation expressed as a calendar date therefore lands on a day when nothing settles under this calendar. The working month has already finished, and the two dates are not the same.
The last working day of May 2027 is Friday, May 28. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, May 26, five calendar days before the month closes.
The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. Three calendar days of May follow it with nothing settling on them.
The middle month of the quarter
May is the middle month of Q2. Middle months carry the least visibility in a quarterly cycle: the opening month sets expectations and the closing month is where they are settled, so a shortfall here is the one most likely to be noticed late.
Across the whole quarter there are 63 working days, of which 19 fall in May. The other two months carry April 2027 with 22 and June 2027 with 22. It is the smallest of the three, so the quarter's capacity sits mostly in the other two months and a plan that spreads work evenly across the quarter will over-commit May.
The week's first working day is the scarcest
The first working day of the week is the one May gives least often. Anything anchored to the start of the working week (a weekly kickoff, a Monday-morning cutoff, a start-of-week batch) fires fewer times this month than the calendar count suggests, because a closure has taken one of them out.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, May 2027 gives Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 4, and Friday 4. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
One of the year's shortest working months
No month of 2027 carries fewer working days than May under the England and Wales bank calendar. Two forces set a month's position in that ranking, its length and its closures, and they can either compound or cancel: a long month with several closures and a short month with none can land on the same count.
2027 carries 253 working days in total under the England and Wales bank calendar. The longest month of the year is April 2027 with 22 and the shortest is May 2027 with 19, a spread of 3. May ranks 12th of the twelve with 19.
Inside one of the year's denser months
May 2027 carries more than one England and Wales bank closure, which puts it among the year's denser months. Closures are never spread evenly across a year, so a month's own count says as much about the country's calendar as about the month.
Across 2027 the England and Wales bank closures fall 3 in Q1, 2 in Q2, 1 in Q3, and 2 in Q4. Every holiday in the England and Wales bank data for 2027 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between August 30, 2027 and December 27, 2027, 119 calendar days with no England and Wales bank closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the England and Wales bank calendar is no exception.
2027 opens its England and Wales bank closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2027 and ends them with Boxing Day (observed) on December 28, 2027. The densest month of the year is March 2027 with two closures on working days.
The same count as last year
May 2027 and May 2026 carry the same number of working days, 19 in each. An unchanged total does not mean an unchanged month: the working days sit on different dates and break into different stretches, so a schedule copied forward date by date will not line up even though the capacity has not moved.
May opens 2026 on a Friday, 2027 on a Saturday, and 2028 on a Monday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, May 2028 carries 21 working days.
Anchor dates that do not fall on working days
Three of the common monthly anchor dates in May 2027 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the England and Wales bank calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 1 | Saturday | Weekend | May 4, 2027 |
| May 5 | Wednesday | Working day | May 5 |
| May 10 | Monday | Working day | May 10 |
| May 15 | Saturday | Weekend | May 17, 2027 |
| May 20 | Thursday | Working day | May 20 |
| May 25 | Tuesday | Working day | May 25 |
| May 31 | Monday | Closed: Spring Bank Holiday | June 1, 2027 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in May 2027
An invoice dated the 1st of May on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on May 31, 2027, which is not a working day under the England and Wales bank calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated May 1 | May 31, 2027 (rolls to June 1, 2027) | June 30, 2027 |
| Dated May 15 | June 14, 2027 | July 14, 2027 |
| Dated May 31 | June 30, 2027 | July 30, 2027 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the United Kingdom calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
