United States May deadlines
May is light on filing dates and heavy on preparation. Form 5500 for a calendar-year employee benefit plan is due the last day of the seventh month after the plan year ends, which puts it at July 31, and Form 5558 extends it, so plan administrators start assembling data now. Memorial Day is a federal holiday on the last Monday and shortens the final settlement week of the month.

United States reporting cycles and business-day rules
Periods under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure are not counted in business days. Rule 6(a)(1) excludes the day of the event that triggers the period and counts every day after it, including intermediate Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays; when the last day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the period runs to the end of the next day that is none of those. Before the 2009 amendment the rule left intermediate Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays out of periods shorter than 11 days, and that exclusion no longer applies. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, this calculator leaves out the Friday before it, which 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) makes the holiday for federal employees on a Monday-to-Friday workweek; the Federal Reserve Banks stay open that Friday. Estimated tax payments of a corporation are due on the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 12th months of its tax year, which for a calendar-year corporation is April 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15. IRS Publication 509 states the general rule that an act due on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday is timely on the next day that is none of those, and by legal holiday it means any legal holiday in the District of Columbia.

How May 2027 compares year over year
May 2026 also had 20 business days, so the working capacity is unchanged year over year. On the surrounding months, April 2027 has 22 business days and June 2027 has 21. Looking forward, May 2028 has 22 business days under the same US federal holiday calendar.
Using this calculator in United States
The 20 business days in May 2027 are the count to use for invoice due dates, contract deadlines and SLA windows stated in business days. Federal contracts under the FAR count in calendar days, because FAR 2.101 defines a day as a calendar day unless otherwise specified. For an invoice payment, FAR 32.904(b)(1) sets the due date at the later of the 30th day after the designated billing office receives a proper invoice and the 30th day after government acceptance of the supplies or services. Paragraphs (c) through (f) of the same section set other dates for architect-engineer, construction, cost-reimbursement service and food contracts.

How May 2027 is shaped
The headline count answers how many business days May 2027 contains. It does not answer where they sit, and for anything measured in consecutive days rather than cumulative days that second question is the binding one. What follows is derived entirely from the US federal holiday calendar and a working week that treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no assumption about how any particular obligation behaves.
The middle month of the second quarter
May runs 31 days and sits in the middle of Q2, the position with neither a quarter opening nor a quarter close to anchor it. It shares its weekday alignment with January in a common year, so the two months carry the same underlying structure twelve months apart. A 31-day month always carries three weekdays five times, which is what makes its working-day count the most sensitive of the four month lengths to where it starts.
In May 2027 that comes to 20 business days across 31 calendar days, against 22 in April 2027 and 21 in June 2027.
The month opens across a weekend
The 1st of May is a Saturday, a weekend day under the US federal calendar, whose week runs against a Saturday and Sunday weekend. Nothing that settles on working days moves on it. A month that opens this way loses its first working day to the calendar before any holiday is counted, and monthly cycles keyed to the 1st all resolve forward to the same date, which concentrates them.
The month's first working day is Monday, May 3, and May 2027 carries 20 business days in total.
How the working days break up
The working days of May 2027 fall into four separate stretches. The count of stretches matters more than it looks: a month's total is the sum of its runs, but a deliverable that needs consecutive days is limited by the longest single run, and the two numbers move independently.
The working days of May 2027 arrive in stretches of 5, 5, 5, and 5 days. The longest unbroken stretch runs five days, from May 3 to May 7. A task needing more consecutive business days than that cannot be completed inside a single stretch, whatever the month's total looks like.
The month is balanced end to end. Its opening and closing stretches are the same length, five days each, so work pushed from the start of May to its end finds the same amount of room it left behind. That symmetry is the exception rather than the rule.
Three weekdays occur five times
A 31-day month contains four full seven-day cycles and three days over, so exactly three weekdays occur five times and the other four occur four times. In May 2027 the three are Sunday, Monday, and Saturday. Which three it is follows entirely from the weekday the month opens on, which is why the working-day count of a 31-day month moves year to year even when its holidays do not.
Only Monday among them is a working day, so part of the surplus is absorbed by the Saturday and Sunday weekend and never reaches the working total. That split is why two months of the same length can carry different working-day counts without any holiday being involved.
One closure, and where it lands
May 2027 carries a single US federal closure on a working day: Memorial Day on Monday, May 31. A holiday's cost to a month is not only the day it removes; it is also where the removal falls, because the same closure can extend an existing break or cut a working stretch in half.
It sits directly beside a weekend rather than inside a working week, so it extends an existing break instead of creating a new one. That is the cheapest position a holiday can occupy: the month loses a day but keeps its shape.
20 working days pass before the closure and only 0 follow it. With the break past the midpoint, most of the month's capacity has already been spent when it arrives, so anything the closure displaces competes for a shrinking remainder.
The closures around this month
May 2027 carries one US federal closure of its own, and the months on either side add their own. Where a deadline sits close to a month boundary, the closure that moves it is as likely to be outside the month as inside it.
Looking outside the month, the last was Presidents' Day on February 15, 2027, 75 calendar days before May began and the next is Juneteenth (observed) on June 18, 2027, 18 calendar days after it ends.
Across the whole of 2027 the US federal calendar puts 12 closures on working days, of which one falls in May. That ratio, rather than the raw count, is what tells you whether a month is carrying more than its share of the year's downtime.
The month ends on a closure
The last calendar day of May 2027 is a public holiday: Memorial Day, falling on a Monday. A month-end obligation expressed as a calendar date therefore lands on a day when nothing settles under this calendar. The working month has already finished, and the two dates are not the same.
The last working day of May 2027 is Friday, May 28. Counting back from there, the third-to-last is Wednesday, May 26, five calendar days before the month closes.
The working month ends on the last working day of a week, so the final stretch is a complete one and nothing is left hanging mid-week. Three calendar days of May follow it with nothing settling on them.
The middle month of the quarter
May is the middle month of Q2. Middle months carry the least visibility in a quarterly cycle: the opening month sets expectations and the closing month is where they are settled, so a shortfall here is the one most likely to be noticed late.
Across the whole quarter there are 63 business days, of which 20 fall in May. The other two months carry April 2027 with 22 and June 2027 with 21. It is the smallest of the three, so the quarter's capacity sits mostly in the other two months and a plan that spreads work evenly across the quarter will over-commit May.
Every working weekday occurs the same number of times
May 2027 works each weekday of its week the same number of times. That is the flat case, and it is the only one where a weekly recurring commitment costs the same whichever weekday it is pinned to. It happens when the month's length and its closures happen to cancel, not because the month is regular: the calendar census above and this one can agree for quite different reasons.
Counted as worked rather than as occurring, May 2027 gives Monday 4, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 4, Thursday 4, and Friday 4. A weekly commitment pinned to a particular weekday fires that many times in the month, which is the number a rota needs and not the one the calendar shows.
Where the month sits in the year
May sits in the middle of 2027 by working-day count under the US federal calendar. The middle of that ranking is where a month's total is least informative on its own, because a mid-ranked month can be a long month carrying closures or a short one carrying none, and the two need different plans.
2027 carries 249 business days in total under the US federal calendar. The longest month of the year is March 2027 with 23 and the shortest is February 2027 with 19, a spread of 4. May ranks 8th of the twelve with 20.
Inside the year's longest clear run
May 2027 sits inside the longest stretch of 2027 with no US federal closure in it. Where a month falls relative to its country's closure clusters changes what the same working-day count is worth: an uninterrupted month inside a long clear run behaves differently from one of equal length wedged between two closures.
Across 2027 the US federal closures fall 3 in Q1, 2 in Q2, 2 in Q3, and 5 in Q4. Every holiday in the US federal data for 2027 falls on a working day, so the country's holiday count and its working-day loss are the same number this year, which is not usually the case.
The longest uninterrupted run in the 2027 calendar sits between February 15, 2027 and May 31, 2027, 105 calendar days with no US federal closure in between. Stretches like that are where multi-week work belongs, and they move from year to year whenever a movable holiday does.
Where the month sits in the year's closure pattern
Closures are not spread evenly across a calendar year. They cluster around fixed anniversaries and around whichever lunar or movable feasts a jurisdiction observes, so two adjacent months can carry very different loads, and the US federal calendar is no exception.
2027 opens its US federal closures with New Year's Day on January 1, 2027 and ends them with New Year's Day 2028 (observed) on December 31, 2027. The densest month of the year is January 2027 with two closures on working days.
The same count as last year
May 2027 and May 2026 carry the same number of business days, 20 in each. An unchanged total does not mean an unchanged month: the working days sit on different dates and break into different stretches, so a schedule copied forward date by date will not line up even though the capacity has not moved.
May opens 2026 on a Friday, 2027 on a Saturday, and 2028 on a Monday. That movement, one weekday in a common year and two after a leap day, is what makes the three counts differ. The number of closures on working days is the same in both years, so the whole of any difference comes from weekday alignment. Looking ahead, May 2028 carries 22 business days.
Anchor dates that do not fall on working days
Three of the common monthly anchor dates in May 2027 land on a day this calendar does not work. A month with this many blocked anchors pushes several cycles onto the same few dates, because each of them resolves forward to the next available working day and those tend to be shared.
| Date | Weekday | Status under the US federal calendar | First working day on or after |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 1 | Saturday | Weekend | May 3, 2027 |
| May 5 | Wednesday | Working day | May 5 |
| May 10 | Monday | Working day | May 10 |
| May 15 | Saturday | Weekend | May 17, 2027 |
| May 20 | Thursday | Working day | May 20 |
| May 25 | Tuesday | Working day | May 25 |
| May 31 | Monday | Closed: Memorial Day | June 1, 2027 |
The final column is arithmetic, not a legal conclusion. Whether an obligation actually moves when its date is not a working day depends on the instrument that sets it, and this site does not assume a shift rule for any jurisdiction. Where a rule is known it is stated in the holiday data methodology and on the country page it applies to.
Net terms dated in May 2027
An invoice dated the 1st of May on calendar-day Net 30 terms comes due on May 31, 2027, which is not a working day under the US federal calendar. A term counted in calendar days can land anywhere in the week, and roughly two days in seven it lands somewhere nothing settles, which is the ordinary reason a payment shows as late by a day or two without anyone being late.
| Invoice date | Net 30, calendar days | Net 60, calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Dated May 1 | May 31, 2027 (rolls to June 1, 2027) | June 30, 2027 |
| Dated May 15 | June 14, 2027 | July 14, 2027 |
| Dated May 31 | June 30, 2027 | July 30, 2027 |
Net 30 and Net 60 are commercial conventions rather than statutory periods, and both are counted here in calendar days, which is how they are almost always written. Where a contract counts in working days instead, use the between-dates calculator with the United States calendar selected, because the two produce different dates whenever a closure falls inside the term.
